The "BOSS" is back

"LAS VEGAS — Tired of playing second fiddle to the Hemi engine — perhaps the most famous power plant of its kind in the U.S. — Ford said on Tuesday that it is resurrecting its legendary 5.0-liter V8 engine with an all-new Ford Racing Boss 302.

A new line of Boss 302 crate engines will hit the aftermarket in early 2007.

Ford said the Boss engines can accommodate displacements from 302 to 363 cubic inches. The engines are rated from 340 to 500 horsepower. The automaker said the retail price for the Boss 302 block is $1,759, with Boss engines ranging from $4,650 to $10,000 for the 500-hp Boss 331-cubic-inch engine. The engines come with a 12-month/12,000-mile limited warranty.

While the Boss is available only in crate form now, it is expected to find a home under the hood of the Shelby GT, the 2008 Ford F-150 and other special-edition Ford vehicles in the future.

The original Boss 302 — which made its debut in 1969 — powered the limited-production Mustang Boss 302. The car got its name from the engine that powered the Mustang to a Sports Car Club of America Trans-Am series win in 1970. The original Boss 302 delivered less than 300 hp.

Several SEMA vehicles include the new Boss 302, including a 2007 Galpin Ford Mustang featuring a 360-hp Boss engine and a Hotrods and Horsepower SEMA Deuce featuring a 360-hp Boss engine.

That's awesome. A bit worried about the warranty though.

You'd think though with all of the financial troubles Ford is having bringing back an engine to compete with HEMI would be low on their list.

im glad to see the 5.0 make its return. i loved riding around in my friends 83 lx sleeper with the t tops open. i dont think the hemi should be too scared though. the 302 is remarkable but still not so much a legend as the hemi.

i thought the video would be a cool mustang commercial, why timberland?

because fords like this are stupidly cheap (and i mean REALLYA CHEAP) compared to euro cars here, at the exchange rate. we don't have anything that competes. a ford mustang v8 is what, 30000 dollars in america? that will get you a nice ford focus here in europe.

here a mustang sells (with the steering wheel on the wrong side) for 50000 dollars. yeah, we're suckers for american imports. only outlandish, v8 imports though. no-one buys v6 americans, bar the 300c, which is a success with an M-B diesel.
why don't they make a slightly more upmarket version with plastic instead of straw on the inside? that could sell here.

Agreed, however I wouldnt mind paying a few hundred more for better interior material quality and more safety standard safety features.
