BMW Representative Believes Governments Will Not Allow Fully Self Driving Cars

Fully autonomous cars may never be allowed on the roads, according to a senior member of BMW.

Ian Robertson, BMW’s special representative in the UK, believes that regulation will ultimately curtail autonomous features. “I think Governments will actually say ‘okay, autonomous can go this far’”, he said. “It won’t be too long before Government says, or regulators say, that in all circumstances it will not be allowed.”

I'd agree with this as "someone" must be liable for a crash. If the car is self driving who's the liable party? With 5% of the world population and 73% of the worlds lawyers, this is going to be a field day for the ambulance chasing crowd...

I have always believed that autonomous travel in cars would be limited to long distance highways that have been specifically equipped for this. It not only has the ability to make long distance travel easy for those who do not like driving long distances - but it could actually allow faster speeds as well.

It is the Insurance industry and the Judicial Branch that will decide the fate of AUtonomous driving though. I believe that no manufacturer will produce them if THEY become the party of liability in even a small percentage of crashes - unless they can pass that liability along to the buyer by contract. However - AS a person who spends some time in major cities - I still cannot see an autonomous system successfully navigating in Rome - or London - or Hong Kong - much less NYC.Humans are simply not predictable enough.
