Who Can Hold Out Longer In A Tariff War? The US Or The EU?

The European Union has claimed that Donald Trump’s plans to impose higher import taxes on cars to the US would harm his own country’s economy.

Trump’s government is threatening to raise tariffs for EU-made cars to 20% to 'rebalance' the EU's 10% tariff on cars imported into its region. The US's current, long-standing rate stands at 2%.

But in a submission sent to the US Department of Commerce, the EU said that such an increase would be to the detriment of the US’s own interests. It said that car imports from Europe to the US had grown at the same pace as demand from the US market, showing that they were filling a gap that domestic output could not, rather than eating into domestic sales as Trump has suggested.

USA by far. The EU has automotive production overcapacity so anything that would reduce their volume is a massive hit to a precarious industry.

This is all about dethroning Merkel and NATO payment. If the old hag is smart and wants to stay in power, she'll cut a deal and fast.

Correct, the German automakers are already asking for an even playing field. When and if Germany flinches the rest will follow.

The EU does not have the same clout as China has so I think they will eventually have to cut a deal. Alternatively they could expand their factories in the US to build more SUV's. That would conceivably be a win for the American worker. China is a completely different story. They could significantly hurt GM, Ford, and FCA if they chose to either severely limit sales or production of vehicles in China or even decided to close production. China is not a democracy and has no problem causing economic pain to it's population.

Of course China and EU is different.
But even US is a democracy, our president has no problem causing pain to common consumer with tariff that no one, not even MFR, asked for, isn't it?

I'm with Trump on many agendas, but he's wrong on this one. He doesn't think a Harley should be produced outside of US, nor do I think a 911 should be produced outside of Germany. If American likes to drive German cars, that's people's business, not his.

@MDarringer, nobody makes money as a foreign company operating in a communist country. Nobody. Trump is happy to slap a 25% tariff on everything made in China, because China rigs its markets and its currency to screw all its trading partners, in favor of China.

I'd rather see America working with its allies, neighbors, and trading partners co-operatively, rather than operating in the manner of a boastful, swaggering, paranoid, lying bully who claims everyone is his enemy, and is out to get him.

So I'm not interested in who can be the "last man standing" in a bloody war of attrition. I won't cheer on such madness.

I'm all for a return to sanity, in a post-Trump era where we can start healing as a nation, as a People. You know, to a state where imprisoning babies is an insane proposition to *ALL* American minds.

No - The Steve was quite specific in what he said - with which I agree.
THERE is nothing wrong with real Diplomacy and proper negotiations - and WHEN and IF they do not result in a compromise - then Tariffs might be one of the options. Immediate Confrontation is what causes WARS - and while this may be a trade war - other types of war are also possible.

I note that so far - the only so called agreement Trump has "negotiated" with another country (North Korea) - where he gave in on the "war games" - got nothing in return - and it appears that North Korea actually is escalating secret Nuclear arms production as well.

The problem with confrontation is that - it is not forgotten. THere will come a time when the USA will need the cooperation of the EU - and some countries may refuse.

The problem with the Tariffs is that they make Foreign product more expensive here - so in the end the AMerican worker is the one who pays the bill. THE EU imports very few vehicles made in the USA. If the EU targets what they do import - there is a market in the world for Grain and Soybeans - that other countries can step in to fulfill - we might never get back those sales.

The only folks that need healing are crack pots of the DemoCrap party and their leaders: Maxine, Nancy, Hitlary, Barry Soetoro, that degenerate Bill Clintstone, Soros.. the pathetic list is endless... the rest of us are enjoying MAGA and Americans return to its place as a non-bowing to global pariahs, leader.

@TomM: You're wasting your electrons on minds who will never see what is before them. To their minds' way of "reasoning":
... Good stuff = Trump
... Bad stuff = Hillary, Obama, Muslims, Democrats, Liberals, The Gays, The Jews, Blacks, etc.

As the ramifications of this Trumpist, American-centric global trade war are felt domestically, Daffies will surely blame it on anyone other than themselves, and Their Lord Donny. The following post explains why you, facts, reason, or common sense, do not, and cannot appeal to Daffies:

_____

"Donald Trump, champion and avatar of the shallow state, has won power because his supporters are threatened by what they don't understand, and what they don't understand is almost everything. Indeed, from evolution to data about our economy to the science of vaccines to the threats we face in the world, they reject vast subjects rooted in fact in order to have reality conform to their worldviews. They don't dig for truth; they skim the media for anything that makes them feel better about themselves. To many of them, knowledge is not a useful tool but a cunning barrier elites have created to keep power from the average man and woman."

The whole world knows coal is dirty and toxic. Daffy Don and his Devotees hail "clean coal."

The whole world knows human-caused pollution is poisoning water, land and air, and altering our climate to be less hospitable to human life. Daffy Don and his Devotees say "Chinese Hoax" and erase anti-pollution laws to benefit greedy corporations and their billionaire owners.

The whole world knows trade wars are detrimental. Daffy Don and his Devotees cheer it on. And Daffy Devotees aren't bright enough to see that Daffy Don is gambling with *their* wellbeing and money! Billionaires will just mop up American foreclosures and bankruptcies, paying pennies on the dollar, while "ordinary" Americans suffer real and possibly irreversible losses (like losing the family farm).

Stay tuned for more Daffy "winning," and more Daffy blame on Hillary, Obama, Muslims, Democrats, Liberals, The Gays, The Jews, Blacks, etc.

#Hypocrite #Alert

TheSteve was urging that we only discuss cars. He said that we all needed to heal.

Then he goes off on yet another unhinged, psychotic rant that shows nothing but disdain, intolerance, bigotry, and hatred for anyone who is not a part of the fringe Alt-Left like him.

Why did he do that? In his heart he does not want civility. Hell, he doesn't even want to discuss cars. He wants to pounce and shout, to disrupt and destroy, and ultimately to maim and kill.

Who is the NAZI? Well, TheSteve of course.

What happens when a 25% tax is levied on car parts? Estimates are that even autos built in the US with the highest domestic content will increase in cost upwards of $2000. Yes, this will hurt our trading partners (as if that's a good thing), but the costs will be mostly borne by US consumers who'll see themselves priced out of the new car market and into an increasingly higher priced used car market. This is good for America how? Once we destroy the world's best auto market, what then? Will the "agents" and commenters at Autospies be happy?

I don't care. I bought my E63S before the tariffs. Even if they went into effect, I still wouldn't buy an American branded car. They're garbage.

If I *really* wanted to buy American, I'd buy a Mercedes GLE, or a Toyota pickup.
