Are YOU An Android Auto/Apple CarPlay User OR Does This Infotainment Function NOT Matter To YOU?

Are YOU An Android Auto/Apple CarPlay User OR Does This Infotainment Function NOT Matter To YOU?
In recent years, automakers have been trying to change the way we interact with our automobiles. As you'd expect, there's a good reason for this.

Simply put: Infotainment systems have always delivered a pretty weak user experience as this isn't manufacturer's strong suit.

This has led to the development of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Essentially, the days of interacting with an automaker's clunky software are over. Now you can have a universal experience that's essentially as simple as using your phone. In addition, there's added functionality that really complement your mobile device.

Take, for example, easier ability to send/receive text messages thanks to the use of your voice and Siri.

All that said, we were curious: Do YOU use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay or is this technology LOST on YOU?

Except for the fact that until now, you were locked to using Apple Maps. Fortunately that changes with iOS 12. Apple realized their maps program is awful, and people demanded Google, Unfortunately, Waze is still off the table.

From what I've read Waze support is coming in iOS 12.

Even Hands Free - I do not answer my phones while driving -period. Virtually everyone in my company knows that they will have to leave a voice mail - and I will return the call at the next place I stop. I actually get annoyed if a passenger has a phone and people try to get to me through them - but I still do not talk on the Phone while driving. I see all manner of people using their phones - while driving (which is illegal not hands free) - and it is simply tooo distracting for me to consider.

Since that is the case - I never really used my phone for anything else when driving so the features of Car Phone are lost to me as well.

However - I have found that it requires only a little brain power to eventually understand how to use the Infotainment systems in most cars. THey really are NOT all that hard to understand - and while you claim that this is not a manufacturers strong suit - I find it ridiculous when manufacturers spend millions of dollars creating and updating these systems - for the car you are driving - when the Phone makers produce a generic equivalent that cannot access all of the functions of the in-dash unit.

By now - most of the places I go to - the directions were memorized decades ago - and I rarely use the map functions. Believe it or not - I can actually read a printed MAP (apparently a lost art to the younger people) and always keep a good road atlas in my car - although I admit I rarely use that either.

Love Android Auto. Will never buy a car again that does not support it.

The infotainment matters NOT to me. When I get in the car, I know where I'm going so I don't need a dancing infographic. I rarely take business calls on the road. I typically listen to music and often to conventional radio stations.

Just want Bluetooth phone connection and a manual transmission for car driving nirvana. I'm very old school. don't want car tech.

+1 for both of these platforms. I use Apple CarPlay and couldn't be happier.

When I got my most recent car, neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto were available. OEM GUIs are notoriously crappy. It's better to the leave as much of that as possible up to people who have proven to do a much better job.

I have found conclusively than the Google Map/directions app on your cell phone is FAR BETTER than any factory GPS installed by car manufacturers.

I can use Siri for sending a text via voice just with a BT connection. I don't have to use CarPlay for that. If I hit the voice button on my steering wheel it brings up the Subaru voice system. But if I press and hold the button, Siri is used instead. For making voice calls, I find Siri is far more accurate than the Subaru interface. I tell it to "call home" and sometimes it offers the most bizarre matches from my address book. Siri gets it right first time every time.

And I am not an Apple supporter. This is my work phone that I have to be able to answer 24/7. My personal phone is a Samsung S8, but I never carry it since I have to have my work phone connected to BT.

When I'm driving my 2017 MKZ I usually have Car Play turned off, as the built-in navigation with XM Traffic is exceptional. Waze has already been "allegedly" added to Sync 3; I was able to use it once, found it exceptionally buggy, now it doesn't work at all.

When I rent a car I insist upon Apple Car Play.

Even if I do know where I'm going, I still like to use the nav system because of the traffic rerouting. Apple Maps is still very good for this, it has saved my bacon more than once.

The CarPlay system (haven't tried the Android version) is not superior to the software in a MINI/BMW imo. It is unnecessary and only really useful if the car doesn't have Siri eyes free or the Android version or when the car doesn't have a factory nav system and it can be used instead (although data usage is a concern.) Surprised no one mentioned this here already.

car play is a total fail. i dont know anything about the android version. i tried to use it and i dont like it one bit. here are the fails:
1 has to be connected via the cord. i have wireless charging no thanks
2 apple maps are the worst however waze is coming.
3 cant remove apps just notification. so you are on a date and some girl you havnt talked to in 5 months texts you out of the blue and the message is read to you. i dont know about you but i dont want people to access my contact list messages etc just by pushing a button.
4 siri is terrible
5 you can do all the other stuff via bluetooth for free. play lists etc why do you need carplay?
