STUD or DUD? How Do You Like Me NOW? The 2019 Audi Q8 In Galaxy Blue

A recent vehicle reveal that seems to have folks polarized is the all-new Audi Q8. This doesn't come as much of a surprise given the vehicle's aggressive front grille.

The reality is that today's designers are out to get buyer's attention. That's because people want statement pieces and austerity has been out for several years now.

So when an all-new auto like the Q8 comes around and we get a vitriolic reaction, it's not much of a surprise anymore. Also, let's be honest, it didn't help that the four rings debuted the vehicle in a golden, yellow hue.

But, let's try something different.

On display at the Audi Forum Neckarsulm is a Q8 in Galaxy Blue metallic. As we've previously noted, color is a BIG factor in a vehicle's appearance.

I see the Q8 and ask WHY?

(a) Its ugly (that grille!);

(b) Its the same size as the Q7 (minus third row);

(c) Its the same size (same car!) as the Cayenne, Urus, Bentayga, Touareg, etc;

(d) In "standard engine" guise it will probably be the most expensive production Audi sold in USA (priced about same as standard engine A8)

(e) Its appearance is not different enough from the Q7 (the X5 and X6 are sort of the same size but the X6 has a very different appearance - the upcoming X7 will also likely be very differentiated from the X5).

(g) I'm puzzled as to why someone would by this and not just buy a Cayenne which will likely be priced about the same and is better looking/better built.

yup, I love Audi but they are struggling with grille design, In fact most brands seem to struggle, look at Lexus, even BMW with the kidney shape to adhere to. I think Jaguar has the cleanest more consistent grille design.

They are all using the gaping hole feature for no obvious reason. Pedestrian laws relating to cars can be met without a giant gaping hole.

Like the color, but the name is weird, why not Ocean Blue? The pokey rear wiper needs to hide underneath the spoiler. The front-end and the interior are way too busy for me.

It looks pretty nice from the outside, though I don't care for the headlights, grill, or tail-lights. They look like VW and Audi are merging into one, which isn't good for a luxury brand.

I'm driving an Audi SUV now. It's my first Audi. It'll be my last as a consequence of the Dieselgate debacle.

Interesting that most internet keyboard critics have the opinion that the Q8 grille is hideous yet most reviewers (both sides of the oceans), who have seen this car in the metal say it looks very good. Just check out some video reviews.

Again, all the naysayers love to criticize Audi's design. Audi's U.S. and global sales growth over the last 5 years proves Audi knows what it's doing.

There was so much criticism over the Audi Q7 and Q5 models but they are selling very well. The same will likely happen for the Q8.

@coch - yeah ok. you have proof of that. Even the guy who does Supercars of London commented that the grille was 'sporty'.
@klipprand - you're absolutely right. The pics I've seen of the Q8 with body coloured grille looks much better.
I'm indifferent on the look, and will give my honest opinion based on what it looks like in the metal (not from pics)
