RECALL ALERT: Mazda Issues A NEW Recall Of 270k Vehicles For Something We Thought Was Fixed...It Wasn't

I like to describe the Takata air bag fiasco as "the gift that keeps on giving." It almost seems as though there's no end in sight.

This is what happens when an industry relies on one supplier who botches the job in such a catastrophic way.

Late this week Mazda issued a new recall of 270,000 vehicles that are equipped with Takata air bags. According to a report we saw, the initial recall replaced units that still had the faulty design but were newer. So, essentially your ticking time bomb with less time on the clock was replaced with a newer ticking time bomb. Due to a parts shortage, this method was the only feasible solution.

In this round, the air bags will feature an all-new design that will eliminate the problem entirely.

When the Takata thing happened, three things were true: (1) the sheer number of cars using Takata airbags was enormous, (2) the design was faulty and it takes time to redesign, verify and product new parts, (3) assuming #2 can be solved in 30 seconds, it will take an enormous global effort to replace them all.

I knew that when the plan was to replace old Takata defective airbags with new Takata defective airbags that we wouldn't be hearing the end of it.

Meanwhile, consumers were given the false impression that all they needed to do was call their local dealer and everything would be fixed in a day or two. And while Mazda is doing the right thing by recalling the recalled cars to fix them again, many in the public will get the notion that the recall was not performed properly in the first place.
