BMW Group Reports a 4.6% Decrease in US Sales for October

BMW Group Reports a 4.6% Decrease in US Sales for October
The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI brands combined) reported year-to-date sales of 254,297 vehicles, an increase of 1.2 percent above the 251,276 vehicles sold in the first ten months of 2005. October sales were off 4.6 percent, with the Group reporting 24,464 vehicles verses the 25,635 reported in 2005.

BMW Brand Sales

BMW brand sales were up 2.2 percent year-to-date, to 220,885 vehicles compared to 216,063 vehicles sold in the same period in 2005.

BMW brand sales were down 7.2 percent in October for a total of 20,822 vehicles compared to 22,432 reported in the same month a year ago.

Monthly BMW brand sales reflect the dips that occur when high volume models undergo a structured changeover, with smaller numbers of the previous model and a gradual increase in availability of the new model. All BMW 3 series models received new engines this fall and the company also introduced an all new 3 Series Coupe in September. In addition, BMW's Sports Activity Vehicles are receiving significant changes. An all-new 2007 X5 Sports Activity Vehicle will be introduced at the end of the month and a new 2007 X3 SAV is just arriving at dealerships. As a result of these introductions, inventories of these models have been kept low.

BMW Automobile Sales

Year-to-date, sales of BMW brand automobiles were up 8.9 percent, to 172,991 automobiles over 158,904 in the same period of 2005. Monthly automobile sales dipped 7.5 percent in October to 17,466 cars versus 18,889 in the same month a year ago.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicle Sales Sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles were off 5.3 percent in October, to 3,356 vehicles over the 3,543 sold in the same month last year. Year-to-date, sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles were down 16.2 percent, to 47,894 vehicles compared to the 57,159 sold in the same period in 2005.

Certified Pre-Owned Sales of BMW's Certified Pre-Owned vehicles were down 8.1 percent in October, with sales of 5,385 CPO vehicles versus 5,861 vehicles reported last year. Year-to-date, CPO sales were up 13.4 percent, to 69,427 over the 61,241 reported in the same period in 2005.

MINI Brand Sales

MINI Automobiles
MINI USA reported a 13.7 percent jump in October sales, to 3,642 cars compared to 3,203 cars sold in the same period a year ago. Year-to-date, the division reported sales of 33,412 automobiles, a drop of 5.1 percent, compared to the 35,213 cars reported in the first ten months of 2005.

uh oh? everyone associated with BMW has expected this to happen. We still dont have any X5's or 3-series coupes. The coupes just became available and the new 2007 X5 wont be available til later this month. That is huge for BMW. Actually, that number is better than expected and I work for BMW. November should be a litttle better, but December will be more on target.

Work for BMW as well. As I'm sure you're aware bmw4me4evr, BMW Financial Services is extending a ton of lease contracts until the new models are available. The dip in #'s for new vehicles were anticipated.

They're including the entire BMW Group- Rolls, Mini and BMW itself. I know that Rolls only sold about two cars, but Mini is a good brand and gives them a couple thousand, at least, per month.

If we were to include Audi's subsidiaries, SEAT and Lamborghini, there numbers would be much higher up there.

RupertRupert - 11/1/2006 5:46:59 PM

why don't they include lambo in audi's figures? they include R-R in bmws...silly really. and i bet they sell more lambo's than R-Rs.

"...and i bet they sell more lambo's than R-Rs."

They sure do. Lamborghini sells something like two thousand cars a year, where there's less than a thousand Rolls-Royce cars sold. And for good reason. VW has done a much better job managing Bentley than BMW has with R-R.

err yeah... of course it actually has more to do with a wider range of models at a much cheaper price than rolls-royce.

here we go with the BMW excuses. still waiting for product. duh!! so is every other manufacturer. Lexus is waiting for th GS460, SC460, IS500, LS600h, LX570. Audi is waiting for th A5 and Q5, Infiniti is waiting for the G35. You see where I'm going with this. Every month it's the same story.

What are you going to blame it on when the X5 comes out? Somehow this low volume seller is so fundamentally important to BMW. or when the turbo sedans come out? honestly, you really think the 3 series numbers are going to be that much higher with a new engine? most buyers of 3 series cars couldn't care less about the bump in hp. It wont make that much of a sales difference.

i love the beginning of the month

here is where i will step in again ... As I previously stated that the numbers were expected. Actually, they are better than expected. The BMW numbers if you take them alone still equate to about 4x as many Audi's that were sold in the US.

"The BMW numbers if you take them alone still equate to about 4x as many Audi's that were sold in the US."

In the world, that figure is much, much closer. BMW only has a lead on Audi with about 1.2 BMWs for every one Audi sold.

In China, there's two Audi A6s for every one BMW sold.

Sales are kinda slow in Illinois for BMW and Audi (not MBZ), but if you go to Chicago, there are 745li's at every street corner. Several 750's, but if you wanted a 7, you got one right when it came out.

Again, please take a look at the new BMW designs. They suck and are ugly. Interiors is ugly. The headlites and rear lites are ugly. If not for BMW logo, nobody would buy BMW. People buy BMW b/c of the logo.

BMW bought and paid for continued positive pre-views ie stupid handling etc...

Okay here's the deal...

I like BMW, I truly do. But there is one underlying fact that applies to all automotive companies (that is as long as there are multiple companies still around):

New products stimulate. Stimulation inspires interest. Interest leads to sales.

BMW has no new products at the moment, all of there products have been out for a while now (in an automotive time clock context). The honeymoon phase is over so that = a decline in sales.

Not to mention that Lexus launched the LS, Acura launched the MDX, Caddy launched the new Escalade, Benz launched the S class. BMW launched their sales sheet in the red.

It's no big deal though, the sun will shine on them again, it's just not their time. Nothing to sweat about.

LordvaderLordvader - 11/2/2006 3:16:15 PM
+1 Boost
I degress for a moment...

BMW did launch the More powerful 3series and the coupe.

Power is a niche thing though, not a mass sales thing. You want big numbers, you need new product, not a change in the powerplant. Coupes at this price range are niches also. What does that mean? It means no change in sales numbers.

TimETimE - 11/2/2006 7:57:09 PM

Mind that in the latest months inventories were low due model change: 325i -> 328i, 330i -> 335i, E46 coupe -> E92, E53 X5 -> E70 X5, X3 3.0i -> facelifted X3 3.0si. So, therefore also sales were slower. This will normalize in the next months.

Yet E60 will be facelifted in March 2007 & will get new engines, so expect 5er sales drop in the next months.

So, lower sales are a side-effect of model changing. It's normal.

Do not panic!

well huu, i enjoy bashing the euro fan boys ONLY in response to their self-DEFENSIVE thrashing of toyota (FAR SUPERIOR to their fav brands) and lexus (in a totally DIFFERENT league. esp. with QUALITY)

but, to cut them some slack, they ARE struggling with the handicap you mention-- higher labor costs. and higher cost structures generally. just as it's said detroit has a $1500/car disadvantage, the euros suffer even more vs. the japanese. which is why they have to charge more for lower quality.
