GM Reports an 22% Overall Increase in US Sales for October
General Motors dealers in the United States sold 301,317 new cars and trucks in October, a 22 percent increase compared with last year. Retail sales were up 36 percent on a sales-day adjusted basis. Retail truck sales were up 52 percent, led by a doubling of full-size pickup retail sales such as Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra and a 46 percent increase in luxury utility retail sales, including the entire Cadillac Escalade lineup. Retail car sales were up 9 percent, led by Chevrolet Impala, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura.

"GM's industry-leading truck business was boosted in October by lower fuel prices - that's one reason our trucks, SUVs and crossovers are gaining share. Of course, offering customers great fuel economy coupled with having the industry's most comprehensive coverage, including the 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, helps too," said Mark LaNeve, General Motors North America vice president, Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "Consumers are responding to our lineup of new vehicles, including Saturn Aura, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, and we'll have even more new products arriving soon, including our mid-crossovers -- Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave."

GMC, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Saturn, Pontiac and Saab all had retail sales increases in October. GMC was up 75 percent retail, with sales more than doubling for the Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.

The all-new 2007 Sierra pickups arrived at dealerships in October. Chevrolet retail sales were up 39 percent, with double-digit retail jumps by Silverado, up 107 percent; Tahoe, up 104 percent; and Suburban, up 83 percent. The all-new 2007 Silverado pickups also arrived at dealerships in October. Buick retail sales were up 28 percent, led by Lucerne. Cadillac retail sales were up 30 percent, with a 14 percent increase in CTS, a 28 percent increase in SRX and triple-digit increases for the entire Escalade lineup. Saturn retail sales were up 16 percent as the all-new 2007 Aura and Sky continue to bring new customers into the Saturn family. Pontiac retail sales were up 1 percent due to sales increases for the new G5, G6, and Solstice. Lastly, Saab retail sales were up 83 percent, driven by a 54 percent retail increase for 9-3, an 80 percent hike for 9-5 and a 338 percent increase for 9-7X.

"We continue to experience strong customer demand for our lineup of fuel efficient vehicles and new launch products," LaNeve said. "In October we were very pleased to learn that for the second year in a row, according to the U.S. EPA, GM offers more vehicle models (23 total) that achieve an estimated 30 mpg on the highway, or higher, than any other automaker."

GM continues to reduce its reliance on daily rental sales. Sales to daily rental companies were down 14 percent compared to year-ago levels, while non-daily rental fleet business was up 6 percent. Overall fleet sales of 75,000 vehicles were down 8 percent compared with last October.

This is great news for a GM. They have lots and lots of interesting cars hitting the market and I hope they can remain viable.

I just hope it's not too late. Although they look in better shape than ford and chrysler, it is still scary.

At this point, I would attribute GM's sales increases to the new Warranty and lower fuel prices than any other factor. New models are going to help considerably, but most of the best is yet to come.

VAG can only increase sales if they address the quality problems. now detroit beats them out. the koreans beat them out.

VAG better watch out for when the chinese feel they can compete globally.

I hope GM fails mightily, so VAG can gain a larger foothold in America.

Larger foothold, they need a foothold first.

By the way EL34i (racist), I am born/raised in Michigan, don't give me that Eastern European dictatorship crap. By the way, true capitalism is in Eastern Europe, you got the cash/muscle, you make the decisions.

EL34,

You must not be an American. If you are, you are an asshole and you should leave. A massive portion of the US economy relies on GM. Why dont you do the world a favor and go play in traffic.

As an American, I have the right to heavily criticize and not buy any of GM products. Just because the State dictates what you shall consume in Eastern Europe, does not mean you can chastise me for adoring a particular American corporate behemoth.

isn't it worrying when such a large portion of your economy relies on failing industries? (ford, gm).

Our economy? It is the world econony. IF GM fails, the world will suffer. Nearly every country on the globe would lose jobs. You should want everyone and everything to perform at its highest level, if not everyone suffers. Not just spreading propaganda bullshit slamming people, companies and countries. This is now the time that the world is truly a global market. China and other less fortunate countries can now produce less expensive goods and other countries reap the benefit of lower prices. One country fails, it now hurts more than that one country. Wake up.

Very impressive sales GM. Were they profitable sales?

A gas guzzler tax for pickups and SUVs is of paramount importance.

I would agree but for trucks & SUV's it's more about aerodynamics than excessive horsepower. I am currently driving my wife's BMW and I hate it I need my truck back.

" I am currently driving my wife's BMW and I hate it I need my truck back."

Interesting. I assume you drive a big, clumsy, heavy, thirsty SUV-- and you like the way it drives better than an athletic BMW?

Hmm...

there was time i GLADLY went back to my nissan truck, after driving my brother's porsche! (granted, it hadn't been well maintained. it started on only 40% of attempts, when hot.)

Don't get me wrong I like the BMW but I need a big Chevy truck(sounds good ol' boy but that's the way it is). I have the ability to cross the border into Mexico and drive as fast as the car or truck will go of course missing the huge speed bumps they strategically place. The superhighway between Reynosa and Monterrey sohuld be called the Mexi-Bahn. We did recently purchase an '07 GMC Yukon due to our family expanding and we didn't want a minivan and the Yukon had more room than the other more expensive luxury SUV's(which actually get less MPG than the new GMT900 series from GM).

And I truly love the experience of owning a BMW but we have had continuous problems with the car. I am truly amazed at the poor quality and, I guess, design of the car. The Chevy truck I had gave me no problems for 7 years and keep up its resale value. Quality and resale value are very hard to beat with Chevy/GMC truck.

"Did he specifically say he liked the way it drives over the BMW? You seem to forget that nearly all of BMWs sold go to people who don't even truly care about how fast it takes a corner."

Very true. About 90% of BMW owners are the most horrific posers on the road. With quattro and 320lb ft of torque, I can torque myself past them on the highway. V8 is sweet.

rocker, I understand. The new Yukon is a great SUV- I just wouldn't want to own a family car. That's why we're getting rid of our family car and getting a less practical, more beautiful sedan!

This is great news. Hopefully, GM will gain more momentum, and keep the #1 spot. I don't not want to see Toyota be #1- I just think GM needs a light at the end of the tunnel.

yes, no THINKING person wants gm to totally go down the tubes. in the same vein, no observant person will bet against toyota eventually becoming #1.

gm will stay afloat as it imports more rebadged korean and chinese cars. it can become the WalMart of autodom.

This is truly good news. Where I like everyone has favorites, it's nice to see an American car company post gains. In a free market, competition is a beautiful thing, it's a self fulling system of checks and balances that maintains a level playing field. So I say good luck to all and may the best company win, but always keep competitors around. Besides all that, God knows GM needs it the most!
