QOTD: Could Volvo Benefit From Having A Supercar?
If demand for the Volvo Polestar Engineered S60 is any indication of Volvo’s electrified popularity, it only makes sense for the automaker to create an electric supercar that will become the brand’s halo offering. Or maybe we’re just dreaming. News of Volvo’s electric future isn’t new or scarce. Earlier today we reported on a new trademark filing that could hint at future Volvo EVs. The rendering we have here is an electric supercar that borrows some design cues from the Polestar Engineered S60. While it isn’t a full EV, it is a 415-horsepower hybrid, which is a darn good start toward an all EV future.

Up front, we have Volvo’s corporate grille and logo – and what appears to be some sort of modification that lights up. The headlights – much thinner than what the company currently uses – retains a hint of the Thor’s Hammer styling element that’s become iconic of the brand. The hood is low, bulging upward toward the base of the windshield, mimicking the exaggerated wheel arch.

I believe that the Volvo personna as a 2nd Tier Luxury and Safety Choice - is pretty much well known by the market place here. A supercar is out of character - especially since they ALSO said that ALL of their cars would have 4 Cylinder engines too.

I though the Pornqueen was their supercar.

@TomM GMW's i8 is a Three-Cylinder/Hybrid 'supercar'. With Volvo's electrification plans the idea is not without merit..albeit far-fetched.

I believe the question was whether a super car would help VOLVO otherwise - not whether it is possible. Almost all the name manufacturers of cars could make a super car - and often do - and in some cases they sell -in others they sit on lots until heavily discounted.

However - I really do not believe that IF Volvo were to introduce a supercar - that it would significantly help sales of its other vehicles - especially if the super car had some unusual powerplant not common to the others. Volvo has already said it intends to limit its ICE cars to 4 Cylinder engines - that alone separates any potential Hybrid EV supercar from their bread and butter product.

Lexus is well ahead of Volvo, and Lexus didn't benefit from having a supercar. Ditto with Acura and the NSX II. Clearly, having a supercar, in and of itself, is not a benefit.

No... but the gorgeous Coupe that I believe is now a Polestar was definitely an attention getter, gorgeous!

That coupe is completely an opportunity wasted. It's been a case of dumb marketing 101.

Agreed 100% there, not sure they should go any further with it than that though, no real benefit.
