NTSB Debunks Fake News Report - Says Teslas Are Not More Prone To Fires Than Conventional Vehicles

Amid its ongoing investigation into two Tesla accidents earlier this year, an investigator from the National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) has stated that the Elon Musk-led company’s electric cars are not more prone to fires than other vehicles on the road today.

The NTSB’s statement was related to ABC7 investigative reporter Lisa Fletcher. According to Survival Factors investigator Tom Barth, the NTSB has not found any indication that Teslas are more fire-prone than other vehicles. Barth also attributed the number of reported Tesla fires to the popularity of the electric cars themselves.

Yup. I've been saying that here, complete with links to videos that have more details on the stats that support this. My posts got downvoted by EV haters ad Tesla haters. Oh well.

I'm not an EV fan, but facts are facts. There are folks who hate facts that contradict their worldview. A number of them are here, as members.

However - EVs are more prone to Battery fires after an accident than other cars are.

Yes - I am not an EV fan Either - but since they are different animals - they should be considered differently as well. AN ICE vehicle - has by definition - a container of volatile fuel on board - and works using controlled EXPLOSIONS essentially. You would expect a vehicle that does NOT have these two things to be better protected against fires - and yet the EV is not. ANd that is because Lithium = when batteries are compromised - can mix with warm moist air and either explode or ignite a fire- a METAL fire - something that does not happen in an ICE car. In addition - adding more water to the mix will only make the fire worse - you need a dry powder extinguisher to put the fire out - and it will smolder and might re-ignite since the batteries are still compromised. Note - Metal burns HOTTER and QUICKER than other fires.

According the the NTSB stats an EV is 10 times less likely to catch fire than an ICE per billion miles (55 fires per billion vs. 5 fires per billion in an EV). I highly doubt that people driving EVs are 10 times less likely to get into a crash (minor or major) than an ICE driver. That means statistically, EVs are less likely to catch fire after crashing. However, the fire has to potential to be much worse and more difficult to put out which I think is your point.

@Tom re "EVs are more prone to Battery fires after an accident than other cars are..."

This is true, but to put it into perspective, I would word your statement as follows: "EVs are **FAR** less likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles. In the exceptionally rare event that they do catch fire, it's usually due to a battery issue after an accident."

In my view, the much reduced likelihood of catching fire is the part that EV haters and Tesla haters repeatedly choose to ignore in order to support their worldview pertaining this this matter.

When considering MATTs responses - we now have to factor in his Alzheimer's into the equation - and I note it is clear that his continued belief in fairy tales and legends is now likely to be age regressions that is common in these situation. Now looking at his responses - he never brought those up as regularly before as he now is doing so clearly it is getting worse for him.

Regardless of how we feel about his politics (which he also might forget) or even his opinions on cars - WE ALL wish Matt that best as the malady progresses.

Funny nobody thought the news was fake as kids. Or in college. Or when they got their first job, got married and had kids. I bet even 5 years ago the thought never entered your minds. In this world, there are only facts, falsehoods and opinions. Feel free to disagree with the latter two but learn to make peace with the former even if it does not support your worldview.

Is that going to be your new tactic? Spewing the same message over and over? You really made yourself look like an ass in the process.

News is different now. The notion of facts went out the window and a National Enquirer mentality now is the way it's done.

The problem with the Alt-Left's "facts" is that they are really opinions. For example, in your tribe "Trump is stupid" is a factual statement. To fair-minded people that's an opinion.

@MD. The system did that, not me. 2nd, Trump's own party is now looking for ways to reign him in. As well he was given prepared notes to read and stick to for his last cabinet meeting. He sees himself as a stable genius but has lied to the public 3,000+ times since taking office. He is anything but and his statements and behavior (facts) over the last 2 years have proven this. Not a smart guy. And I am comfortable saying that as someone who has met and dealt with VP, SVP and EVP leaders in the financial space, the smartest knives in the drawer and the most insightful people you will ever meet.
