Has #ElectricTrump Delivered The ALFA ROMEOS Of Electric Vehicles With The Tesla Model 3? If So, Does It Matter?
As Tesla’s had a pretty difficult ‘go of it over the past couple of weeks now, we’re happy to bring you some good news. That’s right, good news for Tesla.

We do our best to keep things objective here.

Agent 009 posted a story that basically revisited Sandy Munro of Munro & Associates. You may recall that Munro and his team started tearing down the Tesla Model 3 to find that its build quality was abysmal.

Tesla noted that it was an early build Model 3 — as if that’s a good excuse.

Now, Munro is coming back around and saying some remarkable things about the Model 3. As pointed out by 009’s story and the video, the Model 3 has super advanced electronics unlike anything else in the auto industry. In addition, the vehicle’s remarkably profitable and netting over 30 percent for TSLA. Last, but not least, the car is a blast to drive. This is awesome news!

But, one thing that people seem to be forgetting is that even so, its build quality was still very poor.

So, I’ve got to ask: How much does it matter that the Model 3s are built POORLY?

Now that Model 3 volume has ramped up at the factory — albeit under duress — we’re curious as to how well these vehicles are being built. Tesla seems keen to point out that the vehicle’s build is improving over time but there’s no real way to tell unless there’s another tear down of an all-new Model 3 or customer surveys are answered, which takes time.

Given the loyalty to the marque, I am thinking this could very well be an Alfa Romeo-type situation where the cars may be problem children but the “parents” affinity couldn’t be any stronger.

What say you, Spies?

The build quality was mostly fine on my coworker's Model 3 which is only a few weeks old. Panel gaps were flawless, interior finish was solid. A headrest was misaligned, that was the only significant defect.

Took delivery of my Model 3 last week. Inspected before driving off of lot and panel gaps were comperable to my 2010 Audi s4 that I am now selling. No defects, misaligned anything. Hood gaps fine, trunk, etc. Interior my wife loves the solid wood strip across the entire dash and the design blows everyone away first time they see it. “ Jetsons Car” is what they usually say. You should see the teenage guys heads swivel and eyes bug out when I drive past (IMO my white paint looks the best on this particular car) and elbow their dads. Lol. Driving is great- just as quick as my S4 with even more off the line immediate grunt. I suppose the s4 would be a higher top speed but who cares where I live- no chance to get anywhere near that with all the traffic and law enforcement. Oh.... and 130MPGe while I’m at it. Love it so far.

THe problem with the statement that the Model 3 is built poorly - is that the people who have one - have already spent the money and are likely not to diss their own choice. In addition - they cover a single sample - which is NOT statistically significant as well. I am sure somewhere in one of the former Yugoslavian countries (there are 8 of them) - someone has a YUGO - that has been driven 1/2 a million miles with no major problems. ANd the people who do not have one - really have no inside information regarding that as well.

Polls - as I have often said before - can skew information based on how a question is worded - or if they depend on customer memory rather than hard warranty data (WHich TEsla does not release). And the various road test magazine of all type - are testing single samples again.

Until we get data in - on Thousands of cars - we really have no way to know what to believe.

Are you even old enough to even remember what the 1990 Saturn was? :p

To my knowledge, none of the major automotive publications have EVER done a long term test of ANY Tesla vehicle (except Consumer Reports who bought their own).

Until that happens, its safe to say the quality is still terrible.

The issue is that poor actual or perceived quality is not currently a problem for Tesla at its low production volumes. Its customers are also positively biased towards Tesla. However, if Tesla survives and volumes inch up, the quality issue will become bigger.

As evidenced by today's political climate, people who are positively biased will overlook a lot!

To put this issue to rest - Tesla needs to give a Model 3 to Road & Track, Motor Trend, Autoweek, Automobile Mag, and Car & Driver. If those tests come back consistently good, then the issue is settled.

However, if fan boys post that that "my Tesla is well-built based on my non-expert visual inspection upon delivery and no major failures in the 1,000 miles since I got it.." that doesn't really provide much comfort or hard data.

Well, we know they drive awesome and have suspect build quality. So, it is apt.

Except the Tesla's are going to make $$$ while FCA flounders...

His apology was one of those "apologies" that shifts the onus onto the one that was wronged. It most decidedly was not an apology.

The first 3 I saw had ridiculous panel gaps. Looked like it was made by a drunk monkey. More recent versions I've seen look much better.

But then again, my co-worker's new 3 has been in the shop for 2 weeks. He loves the car but says Tesla's ability to get the car in working order is terrible. Service just seems overwhelmed by the 3.

When you put a product into production a year ahead of schedule, this is the result.

Cool. More sad whining about Tesla from people who think Kias are awesome.
