If YOU Were In Charge Of Genesis, What Would Be Your Next Vehicle?
Genesis, Hyundai’s new luxury brand, recently launched the third member of its lineup, the 2019 Genesis G70 luxury sports sedan. It’s a wonderful car, but its presence orients Genesis’ current trajectory eerily in the direction of Cadillac’s: heavy on sedans and too light on the SUVs and crossovers that everyone is actually buying.

The brand should have debuted with an SUV in the lineup. I don't know why they still a launch that was similar to how Lexus launched in 89

In your mind how long does it take to develop a car? 15 minutes?

A lightning fast development is 2-3 years.

Normal development is 4-5 years.

Two years ago, sedans hadn't yet crashed.

Two years ago, a "Lexus" launch made perfect sense.

If 2-5 years ago you planned sedans then sedans are what you have to launch with.

Is it really that difficult to understand?

de Nysschen headed both companies and believed a luxury car company made its reputation on sedans first. This may be true, but the profits coming from the hottest segment would fuel a lot of development costs.

Obviously they need 3 crossovers. Why does this keep getting rehashed...Genesis (and Cadillac) product planners decided to focus on sedans 7-10 years ago...then the market shifted. Everone knows they need crossobers and I’m sure they’re developing the models
As quickly as they can.

Indeed. Hyundai botched it again and again which is unfortunate because the cars are truly wonderful.

Genesis needs to roll out $50,000 to $60,000 super-fancy, super-attractive and well-packaged 7-seater, large SUV that would go head to head with the $80,000 GLS450/550.

I vote for a full size pickup and a small pickup.

An electric pick up truck with lots of S. Korean chrome dripping off of it.

The first Hyundai Genesis launched almost a decade ago, and during that timeframe we continued to see two of its chief rivals (Lexus and Acura) weather the storm of higher grass prices from 2010 to 2015) and continue to sell a lot of compact and mid-size crossovers. Then with the decline in gas prices we have seen many other car makers get new crossovers out the door quickly to meet the market demands, yet we still sit here halfway through 2018 and there is not a Genesis SUV available for purchase. It's unfortunate as I do think Genesis had an opportunity to be taken seriously early on, but for a company that wants to consider itself relevant yet not offer core products buyers are demanding, it's been hard to take Genesis seriously.
