CAR WARS! Road Trip Showdown — WHICH Large SUV Are You Taking Across The Country? Chevrolet Suburban Vs. Ford Expedition
As noted in my previous thread, many people get categorized as either being a "GM guy," or a "Ford guy." But, I don't really think that necessarily matters in modern times.

That's because loyalty is becoming less of an important factor when making a product decision. Of greater emphasis is the quality of a product and its respective price.

All that said, I've taken delivery of a Ford Expedition MAX for the week. In addition, I recently had the chance to drive a Chevrolet Tahoe RST. Both are brilliant, large SUVs in their own way; however, we wanted to propose a situation.

IF you were to do a road trip across the country and you were going to ditch the idea of having an RV, which large SUV would YOU pick? Would it be the Chevrolet Suburban or the Ford Expedition?

Roadtrip? Minivan ftw.

Agree - a Minivan has all the room - will get better MPG - and is easier to park that either of the two choices.

IF I had to choose of the two - I would want the one without a Turbo engine

Neither of these covered pickups. Volkswagen Atlas or RR Velar.

The Velar is surprisingly small when you see it in person. I'm not sure it would be good for a roadtrip. I think it is more of a around town vehicle

I would take the Expedition...simply since it is a recent redesign

Toss a coin. Both are excellent. We love our Cadillac Suburban. These massive land yachts are more palatable than a minivan.

When you fill a minivan full of people and things, they sag down and bounce off the rear suspension. Seven people will be much more comfortable Suburban/Expedition.

I like the looks of the Suburban, since I have never driven either and I am choosing based on almost no knowledge of these two vehicles I will go with looks and choose the Suburban.

They are indistinguishable to drive. They are large--you are constantly aware of their mass--but they handle more competently than you'd expect, but nevertheless benign to a fault.

Quite literally I'd advise a customer to buy the one from the dealer most willing to deal. There is no quality/reliability difference, etc.

i like the looks of the navigator... not driven the new one so not sure the interior difference between expedition and navi any more. used to be pretty big.

I own a Cadillac Escalade and I just bought the new Navigator. The difference between the two is vast. The Navigator feels 10 years newer than the Escalade. The finishing details and the interior of the Navigator is so much better than the GM product. The third row of the GM product is a joke, and it is plush and well executed in the Navigator. I like the rumble of the V8 in the GM vs the Ford product, but I'd take one new Navigator over two new Escalades any day of the week.

And I grin because I profit from both of them.

The Navigator is new but it replaces a 20 year old platform that received bandaids along the way.

The current GM SUVs weren't all-new when they were last said to be all-new and neither were the all-new ones before that.

The current all-new Silverado/Sierra isn't all-new and so the all-new Escalade is likely not to be all-new either.

People always think the car they just bought is vastly better than the one the had before. That's basic psychology.

The difference between the Escalade and the Navigator is like the difference between two Kardashian sisters. Both have ugly big asses and parts elsewhere stretched out of shape playing train in the tunnel, but you go with the one you think will give you fewer STDs.

I just got back from my summer family vacation and own a Suburban LTZ with the 22 inch wheels, drove from South Florida to VA, went through the winding twists and was really surprised how great the SUV handled. It handled so well through the twists one of my boys got sick and vomited on himself. Then off to upstate NY through the Mountains where we stayed and then to the city multiple times, not a problem at all fit 3 baby seats and 3 people with the trunk full. My twin is def right with minivans loaded up the rear suspensions bounce up on down throughout the ride.
I have always been a Ford fan but something about driving a Chevy just makes you feel cool.

We like our Cadillac Suburban because it will swallow 6 boys and all our stuff without whimpering. We've had it in inclement weather and it's tracked confidently. We took the kids to see their grandpas (my dad and his husband) down to the Palm Springs area and the interior was a freezer without any overheating. I'm sure the Expedition and Navigator would handle those situations well too.
