IIHS Wants To Reinvent Red Light Cameras As A Safety Tool, Not A Revenue Stream

On Tuesday the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), AAA, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, and National Safety Council called for an increase in red light camera usage as a response to climbing deaths due to red light-running drivers, which they believe have become more common due to declining camera usage.

The four organizations have outlined a "red light camera checklist" which they hope will encourage re-adoption of red light camera systems. Focus is centered on planning and maintaining programs, but also deals with public relations, as the IIHS contends that public support for red light camera programs is strong, as long as drivers believe the cameras are to discourage crashes, and not to rake in revenue.

My city had the cameras strictly as a safety measure. When red light running accidents decreased to a level that was decided in advance. The cameras were removed. The yellow timing was never altered, and I never heard of anyone getting a ticket that wasn't justified. Now some neighboring cities still have their cameras, yellow timing was altered, and it was a pure money grab. I'd like to see them gone.

I was also fine with them in school zones. People are crazy around schools. Those idiots need tickets until they lose their car.

I may have listened if they hadn't already screwed the pooch by the money grab scandals.
this is nothing more than money grab, i will not be convinced unless it is paid for by the city and not a 3rd party monitoring service tied to ticketing with transparent access to data.

I say just hire a team of snipers. Let it be known that if you run a red light it is immediately punishable by death. Then randomly kill red light runners. Problem solved.

Roundabouts only work when you have the proper space for them. The county put one in where there really wasn't enough space for it, and the first day it opened a car drove off the side and into a deep drainage ditch. Yeah, probably going too fast, but still a poor design in a bad location. The only reason they did it was to stop semis from taking this road trying to bypass heavy freeway traffic. I can understand, but this is just a bad place for a roundabout. We have others in the area that work quite well, but they have double the diameter of the bad one.

I actually received a summons from one of those cameras - for a time when I could PROVE my car was in the dealership for service - waiting for parts. However - there was a distinct problem with the cameras - the law says you have the right to question your accuser - in EVERY state and in Federal court as well. In most cases - the PERSON who read the plate numbers was not even in the same state - but certainly could not be in all the courts at the same time. SO when a person challenged the ticket - if the reader did not show up - which they never did - the judge had no choice but to throw out the ticket - and charge the READING company for court costs. So - the cameras became useless to enforce laws.

It would take an alt-right NRA idiot to suggest using snipers to kill people without due process - which is MURDER. Running a red light does not rise to a felony - and Capitol Punishment simply does not apply in any way - shape - or form.

I supposed they could put barriers in the road that would rise out of the roadway when the light turned RED - but then it might happen in the middle of the underside of an Ambulance too.

THe fact is - the alt righters have established that obeying the law is simply NOT a priority - so that ANY Psychotic Imbecile can buy a weapon and kill people. And their solution - ? - get EVERYONE to have a gun. Gee - you think they are in with the Manufacturers ?

The accuser is the municipality.

Triggering people (pun intended) is so easy.
