BMW's M2 Competition Might Be The Best Purist Car On The Market

BMW M division cars have a clear hierarchy: CS models sit at the top, then Competition models (like this one is), then high-performance models (those badged just M2, M3, whatever) and then M Performance models (such as the M235i).

It’s the first time I’ve seen it presented like that, but, as ever more CS and Competition models arrive, perhaps BMW feels it needs clarifying, given the increasing number and diverse types of M car it would like to sell.

I wish the 2 Series was a fastback coupe.

Still looks like a squished clown car.

Indeed. And the smart move on BMW's part would be to configure the 2 Series in the styling form of the Mustang/Camaro, to price it like the Mustang and Camaro, and to have the M2 be analogous to the Mustang GT and Camaro SS. Sales would multiply.

The 2 Series has no reason to exist. You can pay a few pennies a month more on your lease each month and get at 3 Series that is hardly a step down.

I drive a Camaro ZL1 1LE and I laughed.

At some point - someone will notice that small european cars - and this car is SMALL - do not sell well in the USA. No matter how "compelling" the performance of the car is - if you cannot comfortably get into the drivers seat - the car is simply staying on the lot.

The M2 is cute but in reality, it is a tight, cramped, claustrophobic little car.

Huh? I'm 6'6" and have lots of legroom. We frequently have 2 pre-teen grandkids in the rear seats of our M235xi. We'd have a tough time doing that with any mid-sized N/A car.

Still a great bargin at under 60 grand. Enjoy this now. I would not be surprised that all future 1 and 2 series cars come in 4drs and FWD based(ala X1 and Mini Countryman).

That would be a sad day indeed. I would not mind seeing a 4 door version of the current RWD model, but a FWD based 2 would be a tragedy. I know they have the mini mini based van 2 in Europe but I am speaking only of the sedans and coupes.
