Could The US Bound Ranger Raptor Have A Diesel Option?
We know Ford is currently testing a US market Ranger Raptor, most recently evidenced by a spy video taken in the Detroit area. So that much is certain. What isn’t so certain is what will be under its hood. Now, it must be noted that the Australian and Asia Pacific market Ranger Raptor, which is about to go on sale, is powered by a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder. Previously we assumed this won’t be offered in the US.

However, CarAdvice recently spoke to Ford’s vice president of product development for Asia Pacific Trevor Worthington, and he had something of interest to say about why that engine was chosen. Specifically, why not a V6 or even a gasoline engine?

A diesel Ranger is a good idea. Having the diesel be the only engine for the Raptor would be suicide in the USA.

They need a fairly powerful engine in it...the Focus RS motor at a minimum and better would be the Mustangs V6.

I'd go with their small V6 turbo for the Raptor and give the diesel Raptor a different name, perhaps Marauder (to borrow a Mercury name).

Almost anything is possible - Could the truck have three hundred hamsters running in a cage powering it - I doubt it - but it IS possible. THere was a time when Autospies had better Questions.

THe fact is - in the USA - Diesel Trucks have not gone out of style - and they have not been tainted by the European Manufacturers Diesel Emissions scandals. Until they actually change the MPG standards - manufacturers still need to come up with a way to decrease fuel consumption - and diesel is one option. Whether they make a kick ass high powered Diesel for a special performance truck is a question though.

If and a big if it is... they would make a diesel in the mold of some of the BMW performance diesels then maybe. However I have not seen anything like that from Ford so it would be a first for them! To me a high speed off road vehicle needs a gas engine from where Fords technology stands today. The turbo V6 Matt mentioned would be an excellent option.
