Mercedes Sales Go On Life Support After A 22.7% Plummet In July
-Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported July sales of 20,034 Mercedes-Benz models, a decrease of 22.7% from July 2017. Mercedes-Benz Vans reported July sales of 2,921 units (up 5.9%) and smart reported 103 units, bringing MBUSA to a grand total of 23,058 vehicles for the month. On a year-to-date basis, sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles totaled 178,882, with an additional 19,831 units for Vans and 753 vehicles for smart, bringing the sales volume to 199,466, a decrease of 4.4% from last year.

“July sales were impacted by a number of factors, resulting in a temporary dealer inventory shortfall relating to our changeover to model year 2019,” said Dietmar Exler, president and CEO of MBUSA. “We also experienced a mainframe outage which affected our dealers’ ability to conduct business during the busiest week of the month. The IT recovery is nearing completion, and we are working closely with our customers and dealers to help alleviate any inconvenience resulting from the model year 2019 delays. While we expect to replenish our inventory levels in the fall, these developments will likely have a negative impact on sales in the coming months.”

Mercedes-Benz volume leaders in July included the GLE, GLC and C-Class model lines. The GLE took the lead at 4,447, followed closely by GLC sales of 4,446. The C-Class rounded out the top three with 3,841 units sold.

July sales of Mercedes-AMG high-performance totaled 2,008 units, with 17,328 vehicles sold year-to-date.

Separately, Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) models recorded sales of 10,508 vehicles in July, an increase of 21.4% when compared to the same month last year (8,654). On a year-to-date basis, MBCPO sold 72,629 vehicles, an increase of 5.5% over 2017 (68,848).

my initial thought... but then i realized 2017 July was just Amazing, this year owners are still holding out for more options/colors on refreshed C Class, benz also spent a record low in total advertising/promotions budget for "summer sales event", and god bless the GLE for delivering yet being the oldest Ute in the market amongst rivals.

Oh and you better bet some heads will roll in that IT department if the Mainframe outage occurs again LOL

And yes it is very weird to see the Immortal S Class do numbers comparable to its rivals...

people make too big of a deal out of these stories. Mercedes didn't have a bad July 2018, they just had a really good July 2017. Plus almost every brand was down July of 2018 vs July 2017, and the ones that weren't down were barely up (BMW was up 0.1%, but that's because their July 2017 was 20% lower than Benz's July 2017). Put some context behind the numbers and suddenly they're not that interesting.

2019's are crazy delayed and we are almost out of 2018's. We have less than 1/3 of the inventory we normally have. Also the Mercedes internal system suffered a catastrophic outage the last week of the month and all systems were down for about 5 days. We couldn't do any locates, dealer trades or orders.

Does not bode well for the tech in their cars.

Mercedes-Benz's drop is magnified by the very strong figures from July 2017. Of course, the fact that the 2019 models haven't gone on sale yet and there was an IT outage didn't help either. The drop is not as bad as it looks given the very strong July 2017 comparables.

Mercedes-Benz is still far ahead of BMW in the 2018 YTD U.S. sales race.

3K units is hardly "far ahead". BMW can make that up by putting enough cash on the hoods of the X3 and 3 Series and they've done that in the past.
