White House Moves To Strip States Of Setting Own Fuel Efficiency Requirements
The Trump administration proposed capping federal fuel efficiency requirements for passenger vehicles at the 2020 model year level of 35 mpg, instead of letting them continue to rise through 2025 to about 50 mpg as planned under the Obama administration.

The Thursday move, widely anticipated, was quickly criticized by environmentalists and some state governments.

The same standards should apply to all 50 states. If a state has an issue, work with the feds to alter the standard. I remember when you couldn't buy certain cars in CA because of the different standards. It didn't impact me then, because I don't live in CA. But now my state follows their standard, so it could be an issue for me in the future.

Sorry - but the state has the right to set standards that apply ONLY in that state. AS long as the standards meet the "minimum" federal standard - they can Exceed the requirement if they so choose- and this will NEVER stand up in court. THat is how our "Federal" system of government is set up. That is why - for instance - each state has laws on how alcohol is sold in the state. AND since the laws ONLY apply to the state - it is state jurisdiction.

However - most states that do set standards - set them for emissions - not for fuel efficiency. California sets C02 standards - not mileage ones.

No - Agent 009 - California has not hindered the market - it has required the companies to innovate to fulfill the requirements -and they HAVE done so - and likely have already plans in place to meet the current requirements set by California (THE EPA plan is still a proposal - not a done deal)

California has a unique situation in OUR country - the set of Mountains inland from the Pacific reduces the ability for the air to flow - keeping pollutants in the air in California longer than in other states - even those others on the Pacific. Air QUality - as a result - is worse in California than in other states - and they have had the most air quality emergencies than ALL of the other states combined. Boris Trump cannot solve THAT problem through a presidential Decree - nor can Congress solve that problem through legislation against the air - it is through controlling emissions going into the air - that California can be bearable (Note that there are places in China that are so bad with air quality that they close Plants to reduce the pollution on some days -something California is trying to avoid.)

I note that the ALT right anarchists like Matt are at it again - that is nonsense - California has a unique problem - and they are addressing the problem that few people who have NEVER lived there or even been there can understand properly. ANd YES - California is a sovereign state - and can make laws that affect the state alone - just as ALL other states can. As long as they meet the Federal standards - which are lower - the idea that the federal government can tell a state that it cannot legislate within their state is simply NOT viable - and will not stand up in court - especially NOT in local Federal courts in California itself. Yes - the Federal Government can set minimum standards - but that does not stop the state from setting ones that are better for the environment. This is simply a waste of time and money - eventually the Supreme court - the conservative as it is - will rule in the states favor.

As far as the Diesel problem -= California did not pay people to buy super polluting diesels by choice - they were supposed to be meeting the requirements - and these companies were deliberately defrauding the government.

AND - the idea of STATE RIGHTS is a conservative Philosophy - not one from the Left. Conservative run on a platform that advocates a smaller - less powerful Federal Government - with more state control. Matt is simply WRONG again - spouting the Russian line - as bought out conservative do.

They say the problem with Capitalism is the unequal distribution of wealth, while the problem with Communism is the equal distribution of poverty.

And so it is with the current Administration: Rather than allow the unequal distribution of environmental cleanliness, state by state, they advocate the equal distribution of environmental filth, all in the name of easier profits for the Fabulously Wealthy, while gullible supporters cheer them on.

I say if California wants to be cleaner, let them! If it ends up being bad for California, they'll surely change their ways.

Only an idiot would advocate legislating *higher* pollution, which is what is being proposed by this Administration. But then again, this is the same Administration that cheers on "clean" coal, denies that human-causes pollution has any effect on the environment, pooh-poohs science and facts, derides critical thinking, and tells people only their government is The Holders of The Truth. Meh.

This is not a factual statement: "Rather than allow the unequal distribution of environmental cleanliness, state by state, they advocate the equal distribution of environmental filth..." because the standards out of California are not supporting "filth". If you're going to make a point, make it honestly without using disingenuous rhetoric.

What's next ? Education - since we have Trump with his tweeting skills and Betsy Devos as department head, we don't need no stinking education. For a new national standard, any of the red states from the South (Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, ...)

Sorry - Matt - but YOU are again WRONG

It was the Conservatives/Republicans/alt-right who support state rights and a smaller federal government - and that has been the case for more than 100 years. They have done this in the case of Marriage equality - and abortion - and even discrimination during that time. Well before that - they did that with slavery.

YOUR tirade against the left is misplaced - but then with your Alzheimers - I guess you just FORGOT!

You're nothing but pathetic hypocrites.... "alt right" yeah, our current darling is a self-made man who works for free, never had a drink in his life, doesn’t smoke and is accomplishing "huuge" things for everyone, yours is a former bartender Socialist tart... pathetic losers. And check YOUR facts, the DemonRat Party's founding father is Andrew Jackson and slavery was advocated by DemoRats, endlessly. Check out the KKK which was all DemoRats. Check out Lincoln, a Republican who brought the nation together, check out the Civil Rights Act of 1964, more Republicans voted for it than your pathetic bunch of arrogant degenerates. KKK DemoRats didn’t become Republicans, the R party grew in the South as prosperity increased there throughout the 80's, 90's.... not your revisionist “facts”. Remember: those that don't accept the results of the election are not patriots, a quote from Mrs. Bill (the narcissistic degenerate) Clintstone (because she hasnt accomplished one thing on her own in her life). DemoCraps take from others to buy votes and line their pockets. They accuse others of doing exactly what they themselves are doing and the Clintstones and ObuttCheeks are perfect examples. Thieves and degenerates all… just like you kooks...

@xjug1987a Now you've done it. TomM will stop taking his Aricept, will drink a bottle of Jack Daniels, and will write a long incoherent tome involving rebuilding transmissions on the kitchen table--which he still does--while gazing out the window at his CT6, S Class, Phantom, minivan, and I believe he recently experienced lower-body tingles over a Bentley Mulsanne. TheSteve will have to write an essay in which he will mention the anti-semitic, Jewish-American, and discredited David Rothkopf in an angry tone to give outlet to the pent up rage of being castrated and emasculated by his political ideology and likely his wife too.

IT really does not make a difference what Boris Trump does - because most of these companies make cars for Worldwide markets - and European and some Asian CO2 standards are even more stringent than California's currently are. THe companies will need to produce to those standards - so only the AMerican AIR will suffer along with the AMericans breathing it. It will not really bring any monetary relief.

AS always - My heart still goes out to Matt's family now that his ALzheimers is obviously progressing rapidly. Since Matt has no real knowledge about my family or daily activities - most of his posts are "FAKE NEWS" like the nonsense espoused by his inspiration - Boris Trump.

Well-Certainly entertaining posts with very little information as usual. So after bashing each others point of view do you think the auto companies are yelling yippee? Actually no. They have already invested heavily in fuel saving as well as EV technology. They are not going to switch gears just because Trump wants to go back to the 1950's.Automakers figure this is just a passing cycle like this administration so most likely hybrid and battery technology will continue to march forward unabated.
