These Top 5 Cars Are Getting CONQUERED By The Tesla Model 3 β€” Any Surprises, For You?
Tesla continues to soldier on.

After having a rough several months after Elon Musk's boneheaded comments directed at the Wall Street analyst community, it seems the company's equity — TSLA — picked up steam this week. Why? Well, there was some all-new information related to the Model 3 and Musk apologized for his remarks.

That's all retail investors needed to hear and blam-o, the stock soared over 15 percent.

One of the more interesting tidbits from TSLA's conference call was Musk discussing the autos that the Model 3 is conquering most. It is a rather interesting and impressive lineup.

- BMW 3-Series
- Honda Accord
- Honda Civic
- Nissan Leaf
- Toyota Prius

Given that the vehicle was primarily built to gun against the BMW 3-Series, that's no huge surprise. But, to see the Accord and Civic make the top five was a bit surprising for me. That's because the Model 3 is a rather big step up from the Accord and it's another universe from the Civic.

Clearly, buyers are stretching their belts to put Tesla's vehicles in their respective driveways.

Having said that, are there any surprises for YOU in this list? What say you, Spies?

...Tesla on Wednesday revealed the top five cars that Model 3 buyers this year have traded in, if they aren’t trading in an older Tesla. The list: The Toyota Prius, the BMW 3 Series, the Honda Accord, the Honda Civic and the Nissan Leaf.

All cars on the list have a lower base price than the current editions of the Model 3 — much lower, in the case of the $18,940 Civic. That shows Model 3 buyers are willing to pay a premium for the car and stretch beyond their usual price range. The only fully electric car on the list is the Leaf...

What about the most direct competitor, the Chevy Bolt, at a lower price point?

Interesting, I certainly would have expected mostly the 3 series and it’s comperitor to be on the list. Audi A4; Merc C etc...

The interaction between the C Class and Tesla 3 is rather interesting because there seems to be none. When Mercedes made the return to an emphasized focus on luxury/comfort from the inside/out design wise, that kind of further differentiated it from most of its competitors. Most of whom have an emphasis on sport and made the 3 series their benchmark, including the Model 3.

So when consumers shop around, the likelihood of the same client being interested in both the C Class and Model 3 is far less likely than a client cross shopping the 3 series vs model 3

These are trade-ins, so the assumption would be that these buyers were not planning to upgrade to a nicer car regardless. Maybe the Civics and Accords were stopgaps until they could afford a nicer car.

Of the 5, only the 3-series is really going to take a beating. The Leaf has probably a year before a true entry level Model 3 is out to compete against it, so there will always be a market for that. The Civic, Accord, and Prius are so mass market that any dent will be negligible.

The trade-in data is interesting but not surprising. The takeaway I have about this data is that the Model 3 has a wide appeal among different types of car owners. I know several people who are loaded financially who happily drive Prius or Accord for many years and who now switch to the Model 3.

Combined with the step increase in sales volume and huge backlog, the trade in data sends a loud and clear message: the Model 3 is truly a car for the mass - it competes with cars across segments and price ranges. It's not a desirable EV - it's a desirable car period.

People do not BUY an EV - for the same reasons that most people buy regular Automobiles.

I do not find in unusual that people who chose Honda vehicles are buying the Tesla Model 3 - which is an ENTRY LEVEL car - that really cannot compete on a prestige level with a Premium car. THey are the environmentalists who are buying into that point for the cars.

You're wrong Tom. I challenge you to take a test drive in the Model 3. Do it - just for fun.

The Model 3 absolutely competes at a prestige level with BMW, MB, Audi, Lexus, etc. From performance to feature/function to brand, that is exactly where Tesla is today. Might not always be that way in the future. The brand will change when they release a truck and again when they release a compact car (~5 years out).

What is even more intersting is that Tesla has yet to ship even ONE Model 3 out of the country, and it is the worldwide market that is going to make this car absolutely dominate in sales volume- especially when the China factory is built and online. This particular Premium model car at $49k currently available like I have is squarely aimed at the EU with its smaller size and beastly 130mpg-e performance that rivals an S4 or 340i in quickness.... not to mention the Performance variant at around $80k that will walk over an M3 or S63 from stop light to stop light... Tesla is going to dominate.

There's more to performance than stoplight to stoplight. You know, things like braking and cornering. A Civic will beat any Tesla in an actual race session on a track, since the Tesla's batteries will overheat and it will go into limp mode.

Tesla has already delivered Model 3s in Canada, but sure that's not really another country :)

Canada is another country because they never were great in the first place so how could they be great again?

The US has always been great. That greatness has been on the endangered list the last 18 months.

Bogus claim - Tesla "July sales" are really not sales at all - just the deliveries of cars bought years ago, when the buyer plunked down $1000 and got on the waiting list. IN fact, Tesla is obviously running out of high option buyers on that list (recent change in sales procedure tries to entice people to order high option version) and it's impossible for Tesla to build cars for all those hundreds of thousands on the waiting list who are waiting for the advertised "$35,000 Model 3" without going bankrupt (in Musk'd own words).

No surprise model 3 attraction comes from both fuel efficiency and performance minded buyers.
