Telsa Model 3 Performance Delivers With 3.3 Sec 0-60 And A Sub 12 Second Quarter Mile
Tesla lists its Dual Motor Model 3 Performance with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, but as acceleration tests of the car seem to suggest, the vehicle is actually faster than Tesla’s estimates. This was demonstrated recently by Tesla owner-enthusiast Erik Strait, better known as the host of YouTube’s DÆrik channel, as he performed back-to-back acceleration tests of the Model 3 Performance using a VBOX data logger.

The first VBOX stats of the Model 3 Performance’s 0-60 mph time was posted recently, but no video of the actual run was taken as per request of the car’s owner. A brief 0-60 run recorded with Dragy was posted a few days ago, but the vehicle in that video was equipped with Aero Wheels, which are optimized for range, not performance. Erik’s test was quite a bit different since the Model 3 Performance he drove was equipped with 20″ Performance Wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, which are part of Tesla’s $5,000 Performance Package.

As of this month, that is no longer the case. Margin on all cars they are making. Even last quarter there was a "slight" positive gross margin on the Model 3 with 0 AWD or Performance cars delivered. As long as Opex doesn't rise dramatically--and it shouldn't after layoffs--they'll be profitable.

It wasn't called out here yet, but last week prices were also raised on cars that are not flat black by $500 (S/X/3), AWD Model 3 prices were raised by $1k. I got my order in just in time.

SJD you are correct that with a positive gross margin the "more they build" doesn't increase the loss. The question now is how to become profitable. They will need a big gross margin to cover all the expenses involved product development, selling expenses, finance and admin, etc.etc. The things that make up an ongoing business. Apple runs about 40% GM while Tesla is around 15%. That includes all the electric car credits sold to other firms which have a GM of 100%. Better, but not out of the woods. Cash remains the issue.

Valid points, but ZEV credits brought in $0 last quarter, Automotive margin was 20.6% GAAP (with the Model 3 contributing very little margin). Next quarter it should hit a blended rate of 24-25% between all lines and much higher volume.

Cash on hand is $2.2 B, enough for 3 quarters at the current burn rate or unlimited quarters at profitability ;)

Making electric cars go fast is easy.

Yes, but this one handles spectacularly as well and the Performance edition even has a really slick track mode.

I can spend less and obliterate it.

Oh well, look at that: https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/road-tests/a22625274/tesla-model-3-performance-track-test/

Civic is specifically called out for overheating after 2 laps. The Model 3 gets 4 laps at 100% power and is very marginally reduced after that (2 seconds or so of impact per lap) versus the Model S which is significantly nerfed after a couple laps.

most people will never take their car to a track, any car, so running qualifying laps or 40 laps or whatever is a mote point. People will launch their cars from a red light or just for fun hit the gas/electron?...

will the model 3 spank most ice cars, even those costing a lot more.... yes it will. that is like comparing apples to high fructose corn syrup. its a game changer.

that being said some one spending 70+k on a car expects it to be a car as well, including all the luxuries that come along with the numbers. I wasn;t impressed with the model S at the price point but maybe model3 is a better competition for a M3 over all? idk i'll have to see inside in person. The outside... i will still take a M3

According to the R&T article mentioned it can do 3-4 laps on a 1.5 mile track until it needs to cool down for 20 minutes. A BMW M4 can do a lap there in 1:01. So maybe 3-4 minutes until the batteries overheat.

An improvement for sure, but hardly acceptable. No to mention battery fully drained after 30 laps (45 miles).

a hybrid is probably the best choice for racing right now... as in the case of F1

You go out and BUY a base model 3 - and I will go out an buy a Base Chevrolet Bolt. Lets race - this week - and see who wins!!!!

And as they come up with more expensive variant of the Model 3 - those people who want a base level car - will eventually give up

not relevant, yes we understand Tesla is in trouble with production/costs/profits and thus are pushing the higher profit 3's... but what they have is what they have. It would be like me saying.. I'll bring the fastest Model3 and you bring the fastest Bolt and then race...

personally i think this whole racing electric car is stupid, the raison the etre for electric car is environment and economy. Racing needs can be handled by other tech.

I will as soon as the numbers come out, whether or not the Tesla comes out ahead. I think it will beat the Civic, and if I'm wrong I'll admit that as well.
