Best Shots Yet Reveal The True Shape Of The Mid-Engined C8 Corvette

A new batch of spy photos provides our very first glimpse at the next-generation, mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette in racing trim, and it looks amazing. Photographers snapped shots of this camouflaged creation while it was testing at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, following the recent IMSA race there.

Unlike prototypes for the road-going Corvette that have had vinyl fabric concealing the body, this race car only wore a camouflaged wrap, which provided a significantly better look at the styling. While the racer likely tweaks some of the styling elements for competition purposes, the street-legal version should bear a close resemblance to this machine.

I really hope this will be sold along side the current or a revised current car. This "super car" will not fit with the long history of what the Corvette has always been, an American sports car for the masses. There is no way this car will sell for less than $150K and that price eliminates much of the current and historic Vette population. I know GM feels it needs to flex its engieering muscles especially after the Ford GT came out of nowhere and it will be great to see an American company throwing in the face of the arrogant Euro's with a world beater. I still hope its a Cadillac as they've been testing and racing so much it'll be great to see it trickle down and for them to have a world class halo.

@MD - A Corvette brand is still a great idea. I wonder if anyone is listening. Corvette buyers surely would pay for an SUV or super sedan with a Corvette motor and sleek styling.

@xjug1987a - Fine with me. I tire of flaming posts on this site that are not car related. We are all here for the cars after all and each has a unique viewpoint that is interesting to see and read. I actually agree with MD quite a bit when he speaks about cars which he knows as an industry insider vs just a fan/owner. Tom and Steve are not angry either, they just don't like being stepped on just like everyone else. Onward we go..

I'm thinking GM will slow production/marketing of the front-engine Corvette for a few years to allow the rear-engine model take the spotlight on the global level. Then an revised front engine Corvette will return along side the halo rear-engine version.

A Corvette brand does sound like a cool idea - but not if sold in Chevy dealerships. Though Chevy dealers wouldn't want to lose the brand halo the Corvette provides.

In others words I don't see this happening.

I also do not see MORE brands happening at GM. By Now GM has learned that the proliferation of Brands dilutes profits - requires stocking more body parts - and supporting different dealers groups with Advertising and promotions. Two brands in one location makes no real marketing sense.

By now - the WORLD is comfortable with a Corvette being a Chevrolet - and the CORVETTE is the Chevrolet Halo car. They will probably not need to advertise the new Vette much to sell all they can make - but it will bring buyers into the Chevy dealer who might buy a Camaro instead for lots of reasons. The Advertising Value of the Corvette name is already established and I doubt selling them at stand alone dealerships will even be possible - nor profitable.

@Carlos The Camaro is in and of itself a significant halo for Chevrolet. So Chevy would be fine. Co-branding Cadillac and Corvette in stand-alone, premium dealerships with Corvette targeting Porsche and Cadillac targeting the conventional premium crowd would be a great move.

Dear Matt - since neither I nor YOU suggested co-branding Corvette with Cadillac - YOu are talking apples and oranges. However - I still do not believe that the Corvette should be removed from Chevrolet - the actual advantages for the Chevy dealer built up in the last 60 years are TOO valuable to just ignore and give to Cadillac. Again - the NAME is synonymous with CHevrolet - and I do not believe taking that apart is going to help.

I have been beyond the 1950's for almost 70 years - you apparently were medicated through that time Matt. YOu are still pining over TVRs - a british car that was out of business more often than in over that time.

I'll be circumspect.

Genesis sales are at an all-time low due to "dealer confusion" about "OK it's a brand now but we'll sell it next to Hyundais" then "Oh wait! You can only sell Genesis at a stand-alone dealer so buy land and go into debt to sell Genesis" and then "Oopsie, we did a boo boo. Genesis will be sold in Hyundai dealers after all, hope you didn't put too much money out on dealership construction."

Let's just say that dealers may or may not have unilaterally stopped selling Genesis cars unless a customer took the effort to ask. Let's just say that dealers may or may not be refusing to take inventory from Genesis and Hyundai (Sonata, Elantra, and Accent) in retaliation for being out of pocket on the now cancelled Genesis dealers. Let's just say that some dealers have ditched Genesis in retaliation for being jerked around.

i just hope it doesn't look as plasticy as current. I really really wanted to like it and it looked good in pictures but when I saw it in real life i was disappointed. since they are going up market with this one, it will probably not have that issue... here is to hoping!!! also i think "what we need here, is more Wing"

It's an interesting idea, but I have little faith in GM to execute a strategy like this to the benefit of both brands and the overall co. More likely they end up rebadging some existing vehicles as Corvettes, cannibalizing Cadillac sales, confusing customers, pissing off employees and then scuttling the project in the next round of government bailouts.

@MD 100%. But I would add in a Cayenne SUV competitor for Corvette. I just think that you used up all the cooler shark names. The remainders like Tiger, Nurse, Great White, Whale, Zebra, Hammer Head, Thresher etc, don't really have the right ring to them.... Corvette Orca SUV?

All good here... the names are terrific. The first definitely should be Seville... ugh, I hate the meaningless alphanumerics. The designations tell everyone where the car fits in the mfr's portfolio whereas luxury car buyers want their car to say something about THEM.

This is why if I were doing a new Chrysler 300, I'd call it a New Yorker which conveys luxury and let the 300 return to being a performance car like it originally was.

I'd also bring back the "formal" roofline that cars like the first Seville and the Fifth Avenue had even if they are not aerodynamic.
