Couple Ponders Net Step After THREE Lexus SUVs Hacked And Stolen Over Summer
It used to be simple to steal a car. The modern alarm systems came along, the "screwdriver in the ignition" trick lost its relevance, and it seemed like thieves were content to spend their time collecting old Honda Accords instead of targeting the latest metal. But it appears the boom times are back again with the advent of relay hacks on keyless fob systems, as demonstrated by a crew of thieves in Canada that stole not one, not two, but three Lexus models from the same couple this summer.

Eventually - the Keyfob will be able to detect the Owners fingerprint and that will solve this "key" problem. However - people will continue stealing cars - as long as these systems are created by humans - even smarter humans will figure out a way to defeat them.

THere was a time I would put a cut-off on the gas line - in a hard to find place - the car would start and drive about 300 feet then run out of gas.

the problem isn't the finger print, but rather the signal being sent. as long as it is digital it can be intercepted, cracked and replayed.

Yes - you are correct about the signal
THERE is actually a reasonably easy way to solve that problem too - it is called a PHYSICAL KEY. IF the cars required that - there would be nothing to intercept - of course it would be completely ridiculous to expect a car owner to actually spend the effort of using a real key to operate a car.

Another way to overcome the problem would be to require the SHIFTER or other sensor to sense the owners fingerprint. So - you could start the car with the intercepted code - but not put it into gear. (ANd owners rarely put cars into gear from remote) - THe problem with that would be that you would need the car to keep a file of possible authorized drivers.

Noting the Visual appeal of the current Lexus vehicles from the front - Maybe the whole Neighborhood conspired to improve the appearance of the block!

Sonny boy, returning to the 1950s and using real keys and getting rid of all this electronic tomfoolery is the only way to go. Well back in my day...*paste*
