2019 Silverado Sets New Standards, But Not To Those That Chevrolet Was Trying To Attract
The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado may set a new industry standard for engineering and ride. It's smooth and nimble, and the V-8 powertrains -- representing a vast majority of projected sales -- are a joy to drive.

Particularly impressive are General Motors' use of mixed materials to lightweight the vehicle up to 450 pounds, advancements in its box and industry-first technologies such as dynamic fuel management, which is an advanced form of cylinder deactivation that runs seamlessly between two- and eight-cylinders.

Trekking through hilly, windy roads last week in Wyoming and Idaho in the V-8 models was thoroughly enjoyable. There was little to no wind or road noise entering the cabin, and the pickup handled superbly thanks to a stiffer frame and overall engineering.

As a truck guy and as an owner of the new F-150, I looked long and hard at these at the launch in Detroit earlier this year. And here is my encapsulated review. Much better face than last gen, side profile too similar to Colorado/Canyon/Tacoma which makes it look smaller than it is and an interior that is light years behind RAM and Ford. Verdict? If you own one now and looking to upgrade, you will like it. But if you look at the competitors you'll feel like you turned your watch back 5 years when you get inside it. But it will sell because GM will discount much more than Ford. So better than last but not innovative enough to scare anyone.

GM wants you to believe this is an all-new truck. It was most decidedly NOT a clean sheet design.

The biggest plus for the GM trucks is the extra 7 inches in between the wheel wells in the Bed - that allows 20% more capacity over Ford or RAM - something the road testers completely ignore - but buyers who are looking for a real work truck will eat up. Neither Ford nor RAM have a way to compete with that for years. I have actually seen the new interior of the trucks - and it is nowhere as bad as it has been depicted as well. Again - it depends on what you are looking for in a Truck. Also - we have yet to see the Denali from GMC too.

I suspect these trucks(GmC and Chevy combined) will again outsell the F150 when they are being fully produced.

There is ONE place where I believe GM is missing HUGE business that it could have easily. Eventually - the Escalade will be based on this Truck Platform - meaning that ITS interior would be compatible with other trucks in the line. Now- if they worked to AVOID the problems Lincoln had with its not-so-truck like Pick up - it is possible that they could create a High Luxury version that would be above the GMC Denali - but still be a truck.

I believe that a pickup - with an Escalade interior - could also have a higher performance version of the 6.2 engine - or I Imagine it could also have the new GM Twin Turbo V8s available - the one from Cadillac or the one from the new Corvette which are being made in the same factory.

Agree.... But GM has a history of "just giving enough" and never really being class leading. Its a shame with the engineering prowess of GM they don't unleash on the rest of the competition and blow them away. If I was looking for a truck the F-150 is has so many variations and its great looking great looking. I love the way the new Ram looks, its very pretty (IMO) and the coil spring suspension makes it ride like a car. This new Chevy is clumsy looking with those stoopid "darts" by the lights, I wouldnt even go look at it, another missed oppty. Escalade pick up is a good idea as the Mercedes PU IS goind to show up someday. There are buyers for them and GM can get ahead of the curve.... What do you think about a Canyon based small Cadillac pick up?

General Motors actually has a history of producing many firsts in the industry - and has many class leading products that show its ability to do so.

Clearly - GM leads in its ability to use different Metals in their cars - because of their lead in welding techniques. THE Omega platform that the Cadillac CT6 is based on is an example of class leading tech that allowed a luxury ride - more rigid construction - along with a decrease in weight that is unmatched so far.

GM automatic transmissions have led the industry - and been used in Rolls ROyce and BMW. Their Air conditioner COmpressors have been used by lots of different manufacturers - from FORD to Mercedes - to VW. And one forgets that it was GM that led the EV beginning as well.

I consider the F150 to be too cartoonish for me - but styling is personal - so I will not go there much - but yes - I like the new GMC Sierra.. AS far as the Escalade - Mercedes does not have a Frame based truck on which it can enter the competition for the Escalade.

Frankly - I do not believe that GM is going to make the Cadillac Pick Up I proposed. So - making a smaller one is a non starter.
