DRIVEN: 2018 Volkswagen Golf R - A Hot Hatch For Grown-ups

Congratulations—you've become a real adult. You've braved the listless wilds of your twenties, nailed down a decent career track, and somehow made it to the next financial level. You're far more mature than you were 10 years ago, and it's time for a new car to reflect that. Problem is, you just can't stop reminiscing about that clapped-out Honda Civic DX hatch you had way back in high school. How to combine these two disparate impulses?

There are no shortage of answers on the used car market, but in terms of new whips, there's precious little that can compare with the duality of the 2018 Volkswagen Golf R. Now, other hot hatchbacks are usually associated with a certain kind of person who has a certain kind of mentality—let's call it "unserious." That's not an insult, but rather a recognition that pulling up in a flamboyantly-designed Honda Civic Type R projects a slightly different image than making an entrance in the demure Golf R.

By the time you are entering your thirties - you actually need a car that has room for your progeny - the Hot Hatches are not that answer for that need. They tend to have a marginal back seat -

By that time - a mid-size car - Accord/Camry/Mazda6/Malibu/Altima are more appropriate.

Who in their 30s wants a turd like a Accord/Camry/Mazda6/Malibu/Altima??? A Golf R or even a GTI fits a car seat just fine

Apparently the measure of being grown up is to make babies. That means that in my county, 13 year olds are grown ups.

What third world country do you live in where 13 year olds have progeny and are grown ups legally. A 13 year is still legally a child in my country - even if they have reached puberty.
Again - a comment like this is nonsense.

THe fact is - by the time you are thirty - it is likely you have married if you are ever going to - and most people have their babies in the 20's and 30's. Doctors recommend women having their LAST baby by 35 - after which a decline in fertility develops. This just happens to be the way it is.

In their next software upgrade, Autospies should install a live video feed feature and we all can watch TomM and MDarringer host a topical panel discussion.

It would be 'Casey Neistadt' popular and the replays on Youtube, with related Ad revenue, would allow MD to finally retire and TomM to maintain his retirement.

I would channel my inner Milo Yiannopoulos, make him look egregiously stupid as he flails and flails trying to get back on his feet, and then once he is tried from trying, dismiss him.

It's the same mentality as working a whore.

I agree, the Golf R is a fine piece of machinery!

All it needs is a body that does not look exactly an economy hatchback. For 40K you deserve something that looks better.
