Battle Of the Droptops: Ferrari 488 Spider vs McLaren 650S Spider

Battle Of the Droptops: Ferrari 488 Spider vs McLaren 650S Spider
he world was a very different place when the 650S was first introduced back in 2014. Despite it offering plenty of worthy upgrades over the flawed, but still game-changing 12C, Ferrari was still very much top-dog in the realm. Fast forward to 2018, though, and things are a little different. The 720S has since changed our understanding of what is possible in a mere £200k(ish) supercar, while higher up the echelon the 675LT and now Senna stand as examples of McLaren’s progress.

So before we approach what a future 720S Spider might bring, we thought it time to see exactly where the McLaren drop-top supercar left off by comparing the previous 650S Spider and the current 488 Spider.

Again we are talking about a strata of car - where the Limits of production are more important than the price. While it is unlikely that many people here will afford such cars - it is even more unlikely that anyone posting here will manage to get themselves on a waiting list for one. Most of these cars will end up in Museums or car collections and rarely if ever see the light of day.

The fact is - as Hyper Exotic get even more over powered - cars at this just above "entry???" level exotic can go far faster than most non-professional drivers can safely go. I have driven a Ferrari Portofino- and since most people would NEVER be able to tell the difference - I consider it to be enough even if it can only go 195MPH

I think you are overstating the exotic nature of these two models...they can be found...We aren't talking about an Enzo Ferrari here

A Ferrari - any Ferrari - has the prestige and reputation of the Company that has produced some of the most Exotic cars made during My lifetime - and is recognized as such by virtually all. WHile these cars are not that high performance by todays standards of hyper exotics - the fact is - they can outrun virtually ALL cars made more than 20 years ago.

Yes - some of these cars can be found - as all cars can if you look hard enough. THey are still in low enough numbers around the world that it is NOT a daily occurrence unless you live in a very rich neighborhood or nearby.

McLaren the company that stole the play book from Ferrari and now is getting positive reviews of its cars. Not so fast, most McLaren are lot rocks for the dealers, deprecate like a stone and have the style of a video game character. Ferrari is the king of the hill and the cars they produce are works of art, not works of theft built to try to be an aspirational exotic. you do not need to go 0-60 in 2 seconds to appreciate the symphony any Ferrari delivers to it owner. Ferrari is alone on this planet for its ability to make dreams reality, lets hope the new tobacco man CEO doesn't mess that up.
