That is essentially the argument some self-driving car boosters have fallen back on in the months after the first pedestrian death attributed to an autonomous vehicle and amid growing concerns that artificial intelligence capable of real-world driving is further away than many predicted just a few years ago.

While I will not be in favor of AUtonomous Vehicles on regular city streets and highways - I have always thought that there would be at least one place for them.

I always thought that there would be a new set of Interstate Highways - limited Access - no pedestrians - where the speeds would be controlled by road - where access to the highways from ramps would be controlled - where space between cars would be controlled - etc. This way - the vehicles on the road could go faster than they currently do - but since ALL vehicles on the road would be controlled - they would be eminently safe to go on as well.

Current Highways were not constructed with Private funds.
Somehow the idea that new limited access highways would need to be funded privately is nonsense.
