Ford Spares The Mach 1 Name From Humiliation - Won't Use It For A Crossover

Ford really wants its fans to be very excited about the company’s future. While all sedans will be killed, including the Fusion, about a dozen new vehicles will be released in the United States to fill every possible crossover, SUV, and pickup niche. One of the new machines will be a performance-oriented electric SUV planned for 2020, which - thankfully - won't get the famed Mach 1 name.

When it was announced for the first time, it was teased the model could possibly get the Mach 1 moniker. However, a strong negative response from fans in the United States has forced Ford to think of another name. A final decision hasn’t been taken yet, but it’s probably safe to assume the storied Mustang badge won’t be used on a high-riding vehicle.

If Porsche can put its name on a couple of Crossovers - based on AUDI platforms -why would it be Humiliating for FORD to make a competitive PERFORMANCE Crossover using the Mach 1 name?

Once again, Tom missed the point.

I am surprised some American's don't get the significance of this plan. A Mustang Mach 1 is muscle car royalty in some circles. Putting that name on an electric SUV is a strange idea, to say the least. If you have real heritage within your brand, historical touchstones, you preserve and protect them. Porsche named its SUV after a spice, they didn't call it a Carrera. There was a good reason for that and it shows.

It would be like Porsche naming their next crossover the 911, or the next Lamborghini crossover the Miura.

Now if they took the Mustang, added 6 inches of wheelbase, and a shooting brake roofline, THEN Mach 1 could work and I think an LWB Mustang/Camaro shooting brake would sell quite well.

Well I think its the right decision not to name a crossover Mach 1. However I still think Ford could improve its branding and design identity by using the Mustang styling cues on every model it decides to make in the future. Porsche does that with the 911 and I think it would help Ford. You cannot look too generic in this market place any longer.

You do realize that they counterfeited the Aston grille on everything and then forced the Mustang to look like a Fusion, right? Having every car be a caricature of the Mustang would be as dull and pointless as the awkward caricatures of the 911 on everything Porsche does.
