2020 Mid-Engine Corvette Gets Ready To Whoop Up On The Italians

Chevrolet introduced the 2019 Corvette ZR1 less than a year ago, but all eyes are focused on the next-generation model which will become the first production Vette with a mid-engine powertrain.

The highly-anticipated car was recently spotted by Carscoops’ intrepid reader Brett Borgard and it’s clear that the model will be a significant departure from its predecessor. Despite the radical changes, it appears the car will have an evolutionary front fascia which will ensure there’s no mistaking the model for anything but a Corvette.

While a Mid-Engined Corvette might be the performance equal to many other exotics from Europe - IT really does not fly in the same category. Most of the Italian Exotics are limited production vehicles - much more hand made than any Corvette will ever be - and hold prestige that GM simply cannot match.

Again - a Corvette is a car you buy when you really want a new Ferrari or Lambo - but cannot afford one.That is not going to change.;

It would be a huge shameful product if GM goes "cheap" on the interior for the Zora. Yes it should have some serious performance chops, but a BS interior will basically kill the entire effort. Billions wasted.

BTW - maybe I had the volume too low - but wasn't that mule a bit quiet?

this should have been a Cadillac!

Keeping a GM tradition alive, the car will be massively flawed, it will be improved each year to the point in the 6th year of production it will be a world class vehicle. At that time GM will kill the car.

i agree with all the posts above. GM can and should build a world beater, but it should be a Cadillac.
Foncool is spot on. GM has for years used a 1960 - 70s marketing ploy to have something new every model year to gain press. "Hey, the brakes are fixed."
By the time the car is ready for prime time, a new generation rolls out with the same ploy. Most automakers get the most press with hitting out of the park on day one.

i.e. - The Cadillac CT6. Supposedly the full size car to compete with the best. They spent enormous resources espousing the benefits of the 4 cylinder.
The car should have first been launched with the V-8 in top trim to leverage on Cadillac heritage. They are just now fixing that with upgrades to the styling and a V-8, 2 years after launch and a wasted opportunity.

While Corvette's will never have the 1%er's appeal of exotics they will perform as well or better, cost way way less and always make their owners approachable wherever they go (except at high end European car gatherings). When engineering at GM is given free reign (which it rarely is) it can hold its own with anyone. The major reason Corvette's can build to a significantly lower price point is economy of scale...GM builds millions of V8 engines a year vs a few thousand a year for high end Europeans. I admire the engineering, styling, craftsmanship and quality of materials of the European brands and would buy one if I could for sure but the Vette is awesome considering what it is and what it costs.

GM likely, will be embarrassed by sales vs GT40.

Given the likely (massive) difference in price, the Corvette should easily sell more.

Pricing on this will be EVERYTHING. Priced like a Stingray with exotic performance would be a total winner.

@MD - What price range for the C8 do you see being correct?

If it's priced higher than a Stingray and replaces it, the Corvette is dead.

If they keep the Stingray, add this as a Zora and run two models into the future, then $75K start, ZO6 $100K base, ZR1 $150K.

If they blow the Corvette's value/affordable pricing, then it's done.

I think there will actually be significant backlash on this product.

Reports are they will co-exist for the foreseeable future.

Reports are that they will co-exist for 18 months actually.

If as reported in the press comes to pass C8 will be available as line expands with 4 engine options...two naturally aspirated pushrod engines
(current C7 and Z06 motors) and two double overhead cam engines (one non-turbo, one twin turbo). Horsepower to range from approximately 465 to 1,000hp rumored. Base prices to start just above C7 (which will be sold side to side with C7 for awhile at least) up to $150K for top of the line. Just parroting back what I've read elsewhere...time will tell.

I just wonder if any current or future C7 buyers are thinking that as great as the Stingray is, I really wish it was mid-engined. Or that it had 1,000hp. I would like to see the C8 find it's own market, maybe eke out 5,000 to 10,000 sales a year leaving the C7 at 30,000 or so. Time will tell what the demand is for this "concept" Corvette which has existed only in magazine pages and on auto show stands now that it has finally come to life.

I don't understand the purpose of this vehicle.

What's the purpose of any hyperfast car?

I mean the business purpose. Does GM need a halo car above their halo car?
