The Master Plan: GM Plans To Keep Sedans And Scoop Up Buyers Everyone Else Abandons

Despite U.S. buyers continuously putting more SUVs and crossovers in their driveways, automakers such as Chevrolet are still focused on the fact that more than 4 million customers still opt for the good old 4-door sedan.

According to the brand’s marketing boss, Steve Majoros, Chevy will continue to invest in just about every sedan segment there is, from sub-compact to full-size. Majoros feels that his company can make gains in these segments as rivals such as Ford are pulling out, reports Autonews.

What is clear is that FORD and FCA decided that they cannot make a profit in that 4 million car market - so they decided to get out of it. Of course - FCA never really had a competitive product - and FORD product was European specification that the US market has traditionally eschewed.

Now - if GM can pick up sales that is one thing - but in addition - there are two other considerations.
1 - Eventually there will be an Economic recession - and in recessions - car buyers gravitate to smaller more efficient cars - especially if the cost of gas continues to rise. Gm will have product designed for the US market -the two others will not.
2 - Eventually - the Fuel mileage standards will be re-instated - even if by the states - and companies will need the offsets from the smaller cars to balance out the less efficient bigger trucks.

However- one must also remember that ONLY GM of the three - actually spent the money to develop new lighter platforms for their products - which Ford pretty much did that only with their Pick Ups- and FCA did nothing. So - having already created world class platforms to reduce costs - it makes sense to use them.

So sad. The domestic Big 3 don't have confidence in their own ability to sell sedan (big/small) in their home market. How silly is that sh!t?!

Meanwhile....Honda/Toyota/Nissan/Hyundai are just coasting along. Making some adjustments, but they're returning to their roots in the US market. Solidify small car sales while keeping pace with midsize sedans/trucks/CUVs.

I doubt GM will be scooping up many cross-shoppers from Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Acura, etc.

I think Ford has a styling identity problem. Perhaps they should take a page out of the Porsche play book. That is make the Mustang the style identity for Ford just as Porsche makes the 911 their style identity. Porsche essentially puts 911 styling elements into every vehicle it makes. Ford should perhaps do the same for its now upcoming CUV/SUV products. Who knows it might work.

Well given that they turned the Mustang into a Fusion...
