TRUMPED: EU Ready To Eliminate Tariffs And Level Playing Field If US Does The Same

European automotive stocks jumped, with BMW AG touching an 11-week high, after the European Union's top trade official said the bloc is willing to include cars among U.S. industrial goods that could be imported duty free.

“We are willing to bring down even our car tariffs to zero, all tariffs to zero, if the U.S. does the same,” Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom told European Parliament lawmakers Thursday at a committee meeting in Brussels. Autos were previously excluded from the discussions that focused on manufactured products bought and sold between the two markets. Removing tariffs “would be good for us economically and good for them -- mutually beneficial.”

No - WE still have a large tariff on small trucks that Don did not want to address. That is the reason why Ford - GM - and FCA are selling so many pick-ups and others do not - they cannot compete directly.

I think he is a lot smarter than you give him credit for. The "Experts" claimed if he was elected the world would be thrust into a world wide recession led by the US. Instead the economy is booming.

He made billions for a reason.

If this quote leads to a USA/EU trade agreement like NAFTA that would be great. However, if it happened tomorrow, just how many more USA washers/dryers/toasters/mixers/cars/SUV's/CUV's etc would be sold into the EU market vs today? Different consumer tastes still define each market. Not to mention national tax regimes, fuel types, and electrical outlets as well as home sizes. The White House will still complain there are too many EU cars being sold into the USA when the number of cars sold into the EU does not rise significantly.

Trump is winning yet again. He has been pushing the EU and other countries for fair trade and zero tariffs, and it now looks like the EU is willing to play ball. The US has been on the losing end of trade deals for years, and we finally have one President with the courage and tenacity to take on those countries, and he is winning across the board. People can say what they want about Trump's personality, but the guy knows how to get results like no President in my lifetime.

First, Trump did not make "billions" as all of you want to believe. Forbes puts his real net worth at under $800 million and his debt at much more than that. And he has declared bankruptcy twice, not a great business model. Plus he inherited daddy's business which if Dumb Donny left it alone it would be worth more than it has under his "leadership." The new NAFTA is little different than the last. The North Korea debacle is still a fail. Europe has agreed to nothing yet so do not get too excited.
The US has not been on the bad side of trade agreements. Our economy is still the largest and most dynamic in the world.

Wharton will also admit people whose daddy gives millions in donations. Let's see those transcripts. He has a BS, no MBA.

You are an absolute moron. Lets see you put up your C.V. here for us to judge your accomplishments then. Trump has had 6 corporate bankruptcies not 2 and they were NOT PERSONAL or can't you count that high?

Considering the man has had over 500 successful companies, JV's, partnerships etc 6 out of 500 makes him a business rock star and success story PERIOD. Show me a billionaire (and I know 2 -self made not inherited wealth) and I will show you someone who has been BK a few times over.

Sure Trump started with a nice lump sum from Fred his dad but still impressive as this guy made his fortune in the dog-eat-dog world of NYC real estate -not an easy task. I know it's not as impressive as being a community organizer or getting elected because your skin color but Hussien had 8 years to fuck up America and apologize for American greatness so let Trump serve his "earned term" and watch him easily be re-elected as the American economy prospers like no other administration before it ever has.

He's a braggadocios douche with verbal diarrhea at times (like me) but is an effective POTUS and only cares about the end result and not so much how you get there or whom you trample on the way. Reagan was loathed by the left and much of the GOP at first and turned out to be one of the best ever and so shall Trump given time to right that ship called "Change You Can Believe In".

I'm not successful and I don't own anything -just debt. I just administer a large trust and other SPV's (assets are liabilities). Trump isn't my President but I wish he was and thanks but I am not trying to get elected as a dogcather.

There is no real evidence to suggest Trump "is killing it" on any fronts. The US was booming before he took office. Again, he walked onto third base and thinks he hit a triple. Many of the stupid, impulsive policies he is trying to implement will hurt the US for years to come. I cannot understand why seemingly normal people prefer this idiot's ranting to statesmanship, which actually gets more done, but does not appeal to the angry, white, impotent.

(2) Your backward, socialist nation may recognize dual citizenship, but the USA does not recognize dual citizenship under its laws.

(3) It would not surprise me, however, that you would have dual citizenship and use it to vote fraudulently in two countries simultaneously (ignoring all residency legalities) while you engage in the situational ethics of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Liberals HATE the rule of law, so to imagine you being an arrogant hypocrite is not far-fetched at all.

My daughter was a dual citizen (had to give up her Canadian citizenship because of her classified US Army position) but the US does recognize other citizens and abroad citizens are able to vote just like all the illegals in Chicago or California -the sanctuary state!

The United States DOES NOT acknowledge dual citizenship. To their perspective they only see American citizenship or other but not both. The USA does not PROSECUTE people who have dual citizenship or force them to choose, but the USA does not formally recognize dual citizenship. I have close friends who are immigration attorneys and this discussion has been had.

@Foncol NO...they don't. They don't force people to choose--except as noted above--nor do they prosecute, but they do not RECOGNIZE it formally and officially. Not prosecuting it is NOT the same as recognizing it. Granted the effect is similar, but nevertheless.

If all else fail, Google it:

The United States does not formally recognize dual citizenship. However, it also has not taken any stand against it, either legally or politically. Typically, no American will forfeit his or her citizenship by undertaking the responsibilities of citizenship in another country.

Sure, you are right, the only reason we don't see Suburbans and Taurus in Tokyo and Bern is the tariffs. If only US automakers would build cars to local tastes over there - on, wait, they do.
Trade agreements are complicated and involve more than cars. Trump is simple, thus he plays with tariffs.

New polls out yesterday give Trump the lowest ratings ever for a US president, 60 percent disapprove, 52 % strongly disapprove. Only 36 % approve. This is the largest gap in modern polling.
And this is before his shameful handling of McCains passing.

I am center left but I think Matt is partially right. Both parties are too political. As for the mid terms Matt is right in regard to the polls. They are inaccurate. All you have to do is look at the 2016 election. In October going into November the polls still had Hillary ahead even after the Comey story broke on the additional e-mails on Weiner's lap top. So I don't hold out much hope for the Dems to take both houses at all. Fox news may be totally biased (except for Shep Smith) but they still have the best following: That is indisputable.

I'm proudly right as if that's a surprise.

I also believe in getting off your ass and making things happen.

What I find annoying is the people who complain that others are being too political when they themselves are being too political and cannot take the heat of return fire without coming unhinged.

The reality is that no one is going to convince anyone, so it's just wild west pissing in the wind, but when you do that, complaining of being pissed on is hypocritical when they are a part of the flow.

I find so many people here to be so one-track minded that they are profoundly easy to trigger (the same trigger every time) and they are not smart enough to catch on to the process.

I'm a fiscal conservative and feel absolutely no need to support lazy people. I worked my way out of poverty and I resent those who wish to wallow in it and make it out to be someone else's fault.

I remember being 14 and targeting exactly how I would claw my way out. The plan worked like a charm.

read FiveThirtyEight, Nate Silver's web site. He is a statistician who has correctly predicted not only the winner of the past several elections, but the margin of victory. He said the undecided's would determine the 2016 election and there were too many to predict either way. As it turns out MOST voted for Hillary, but the electoral went the other way. He also underestimated the impact of Trump's Russian buddies.

Keep telling yourselves the polls are biased and we will see a democratic congress.
