Think Tesla Is A Passing Fancy? Well The Model 3 Just Outsold BMW's Entire Sedan Lineup In August

Tesla Model 3 sales in August hit an estimated 17,800 units, an all-time high for any plug-in electric car ever. Surely that’s impressive, but what if we look at it in a slightly broader way.

Like, for example, how does that 17,800-unit figure stack up against say BMW passenger car sales. And no, we don’t mean just 3 Series sales, but rather all passenger car sales by BMW in the U.S. for the month of August.

Well, short answer is that BMW loses. Here’s a look at that sales figure:

  • BMW passenger cars August 2018 – 14,450

There was a time when the Fiat 124 and its Various forms around the world outsold the entire Mercedes lineup too -

THe Tesla model 3 is an entry level vehicle - that people are getting overcharged for but in NO WAY competes with any BMW logo vehicle. Get over it.

Once pent--up demand is fulfilled and the tax incentive disappears the sales will drop back down. Still not making money and many competitors are coming on stream.

Let the numbers speak for themselves. The more excuses you have, the lamer you get.

There are those on this site that want Telsa to fail and will refuse to acknowledge that Tesla vehicles are cross-shopped and sold at luxury car prices to luxury car buyers. Fine. Instead, let's celebrate American Ingenuity and congratulate Tesla for outselling the entire BMW range with 1 model for the month of August. And get used to seeing this success. Now the Model 3 production is ramped up, I suspect the monthly sales will only grow from here, rebate or no rebate.

Compare Nissan Leaf sales to Tesla (EV to EV), and you might be surprised!

By the same token, more Nissan Leafs sold that BMWs. Apples and oranges.

Model 3 crushes the Leaf in sales - at twice the price. What's your point?

Hate to break the Leaf bubble, but it is not a strong seller in the USA. In August 2018 1,315 Leaf's were sold in the USA. For all of 2017, 11,230 units were sold in the USA. It isn't in the same class as the Model 3 but it is outsold by it by a wide margin.

In the real world, people like me who could afford to buy a new 3-series BMW and instead bought a Tesla Model 3 would disagree with you not comparing Benz, Audi, and BMW with Tesla. So would the people stopping me on a daily basis and asking about the car. A lot of people are very curious about it wanting more information and seem suprised I paid only $55k out the door for such a beautifully designed car.

I splurged and bought my wife the RWD for $56K - delivered a few months ago, but saved $70K for me to buy the Performance Model which I hope will arrive before the end of Q3. All these expenses were financed by the generosity of the shorts from the last stock run up. This week is another opportunity to get back in and ride the next wave in a month or so. Rinse & Repeat.

Mercedes just announced it will bring 100 new electric hybrids, electric plug in hybrids and all electric vehicles to market by 2025. Be afraid Tesla, be very afraid. M-B, BMW, Audi and Porsche electric vehicles will soon be eating you for lunch.

@pugproud is correct, but what is coming now and soon from now? High-end expensive luxury BEV's. Remember Porsche only sells 6,700 Panamera's in the USA each year. The Mission E will likely cannibalize from these sales figures. It is also not a high volume production car. Model 3 sales will continue to grow and if a CUV Model Y is released, sales will grow even faster. The competition is coming, but not fast enough and with the right products to stop the Tesla train. If they can stay afloat financially, the next 5 years look very bright.

@CCC That's true. I had the Porsche numbers in my head. But if we expand it and say there will be a BEV S-Class, A8 and 7 Series, all sell far less than the Model S. And as with the Porsche, I think they will cannibalize from their existing ICE car products vs taking share from Tesla. I could be wrong. But those who bought the Model S did so to be different and walk a certain path.

Announcing is one thing.
Disappointing with the EQC the other.

Factually, 009 is correct.

In Reality, Model 3's were 'backlog' production - so the comparison is not valid.

Great news that Tesla filled orders that were made 2-3 years ago.

Key data point missing - visibility into how the "backlog" is looking in the future and how the "unreserved" order book is looking.

Once the backlog is filled, does Tesla have a sustainable order book for the future?

When is the small Tesla SUV coming out? Must not be within the next 3 years, otherwise Tesla would be taking reservations for it.

This is a funny factoid but it is meaningless.

You acknowledge it's fact, yet you still can't accept it and try to spin. They are simple numbers, one bigger than the other. This type of spin reminds me of the doofus in the White House - facts are true only when they suit you. SAD!

The current Model 3 global production backlog is 420,000 orders. I think that is enough to sustain them going forward. Any luxury automotive firm would kill for an order book like that. It is still a drop in the bucket in a 17m unit market like the USA. The Model Y will be the real game changer for Tesla.

EVisNow -

Ok, so if 420,000 (I am suspicious of any stat containing '420' that comes from CA) is the real backlog - why does my local Tesla store say that I can get a fully-loaded Model 3 in a few months time?

There seems to be a whole bunch of fuzzy math around the "order book" and not much factual info.

I'm just sayin' facts would be nice. I think its unlikely that the real backlog is 420,000

I mentioned it years ago when Model S sales were easily more than most of the German S-class cars. It's not a coincidence that large sedans were dropping in sales. Lexus LS is a victim of that too.

The Model 3 is another disrupter and the sales numbers back it up. Short term or long, it's a meaningful shift and we'll continue to see more SUV's pushed on consumers because the luxury sedan market is getting eaten up by Tesla.
