BMW Puts A Knife In The Heart Of Diesel Fans - THIS Is The Last Year To Buy A Diesel
BMW is joining companies like Toyota and Honda in abandoning the diesel technology. However, the Bavarians won’t kill its diesel powertrains entirely, but will only discontinue them in the United States. 2018 model year will be the final for diesel-powered BMWs in America, a spokesman for the company has confirmed to The Car Connection earlier this week. In return, the automaker will focus on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Because of relatively low gas prices (Compared to Europe) - it is virtually impossible to justify the added efficiency of a Diesel over the additional cost of the vehicles. In Europe - that remains just the opposite -Diesel Fuel is often HALF the price of Petrol - and a large portion of the population would not be able to replaces its diesel cars with petrol - because they could not afford it. Hybrids are not the answer either - since they still use Petrol - there are to my knowledge - no Diesel Hybrids sold there right now.

The best thing about driving a diesel vehicle is the performance (torque) and the driving range it provides.

I have a GL350 Bluetek and it goes 600 miles on a tank, easily.

The GL450 goes about 400-500 miles on a tank, max, and the GL63AMG goes only about 275 miles if it has a tailwind.

Its a waste of time and an inconvenience to have to stop for fuel (which I guess is a benefit that accrues to hyrbrids, with the caveat that all Hybrids have compromised interior space and/or cargo capacity to host the batteries, as well as generally lousy driving dynamics). Modern diesels have wonderful driving dynamics.

Big yup to you both. My diesel SUV gets highway fuel economy (46.2 US MPG = 5.1 L/100km = 55.4 Imp MPG) that leaves deniers stomping their feet and calling me a liar, because they can't wrap their head around it being possible.

BTW, burn half the fuel, create about half the emissions in a comparable internal combustion engine. Y'know, physics, chemistry, etc.

There are other reasons to drive a diesel besides the higher fuel economy. And currently in the Seattle area I can find diesel for about the same price of RUG, so the improved economy would be noticeable in my monthly fuel costs. Of course, it would likely still never make up for the higher initial purchase cost. But the improved torque and responsiveness of the diesel engine made for an enjoyable driving experience.

While I would strongly prefer to still be driving a diesel, I recognize the handwriting on the wall. The Equinox was on my short list, but I really wanted adaptive cruise. So I ended up with the Outback, with which I am very pleased.

But when I again purchase a new car, probably not for another 4+ years, it will likely have an electrical plug.

I believe you mean Volkswagen. Diesel would still be here without the lies and cheats.

Because duel consumption is very closely related to emissions, a diesel engine that can take you 30% farther on a gallon of fuel than a gasser will have that much fewer emissions. That's just chemistry and thermodynamics.

Diesel engines with PROPERLY EQUIPPED and working DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) systems, DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters), and catalytic converters manage NOx and cancer-causing particulates to make diesel a lower-emission alternative to gasoline. (Of course, cheat devices and lying on certification documentation mean this stuff isn't working properly.)

Pre-Emptive Response:
The anti-science folks will loudly and staunchly assert that diesel pollutes more because... diesel :-/ In *their* mind, when you burn 25% FEWER hydrocarbons, you somehow create MORE emissions, just like magic. If that sounds right to you, then you can also get your Chinese Climate Change Hoax info from the same crowd ;-)
