Test Drive: BMW M6 Cabriolet

Some things, technically, should not work together. Bacon-flavoured ice cream was a recent triumph over adversity that should be used to make children sick up poison, but in fact won a Chef a Michelin star in Britain. And that bizarre meal sprung to mind during every scrumptious mile in the BMW M6 Cabriolet.

A convertible M6 is a mish-mash of goodies that should combine to create a foul-tasting mess: one of the finest performance cars in the known world and a top down boulevard cruiser of the highest order. It takes a brave soul to put them in the same package because chopping the roof off is one of the simplest ways to ruin a car. Especially when BMW went to such lengths to keep the pounds off the M6’s hips in the first place.

Not really perfect, too much body roll, loss of stability and balane. Yes, you do get the 500 horsepower V10 also found in the hardtop version but you lose many important factors for enthusiast puproses.

Stick to the coupe instead of the cabriolet version.

I'd rather take a MB SL55 or an SL65 over this. However for the price difference i'll take the M6 =P

i agree with GERMAN NUT!! For true enthusiasts, stick with the hardtop version. Lets see, are you going to slap on a helmet, put the top down and go around a race track??? I dont think so. Or will you just show off your might at the stop light to the guy next to you? Probably. But you can do that just as well (if not better) with the hardtop. Am I wrong?

Razzy23 I like your vision of slaping on a helmet & racing around a race track in a convertible.

However the convertible is there as a more 'laid back' option for overly spoiled wifes, those experiencing a mid-life crisis, or flamboyant characters that feel the coupe doesn't expose them enough.

So we'll just leave the coupe for us enthusiasts who love to drive, and prefer the un-interupted sculpted lines that can only be acheived with the hard-top!

I don't fit any of those personalities, but I chose the convertible because I love open-air motoring, and the V8 still offers as much thrust as an S4 sedan, just slightly subdued. A 300hp-500hp convertible is probably the most fun you can have this side of a sportscar.
