Volkswagen likely has more electric vehicles lined up in the next few years than any other automaker, but now the German automaker expects those cars to cost more than expected as it sees the competition making progress.

There are two factors to consider:
1) Actual costs
2) What **VW*** expected

It appears that VW's expectations were out of line. They should have done their homework better.

Even GM turned to LG for their full EV.
They bet on diesel and late to develop hybrids. Plus the cost of diesel-gate, they will be hurting for years. The ones making money will be the battery suppliers.
