Cheaper, And Sexier: Does The Jaguar I-Pace Have The Magic The Model X Lacks?

To know Ian Callum is to understand why he was the right person to create the Jaguar I-Pace, and to understand why it’s a success.

The Jaguar design director is a famously convivial Scot, a man of far-ranging interests. He reads C.S. Lewis, restores old Porsche 914s, and consumes an omnivorous diet of music, to which he listens while he designs.

Not sure what the author's beef was about charging the Tesla. He must not have been using a supercharger, so maybe not a fair comparison. Otherwise, it seems a fair review.

Q = Cheaper, And Sexier: Does The Jaguar I-Pace Have The Magic The Model X Lacks?

MrE30 A = Yes, and more importantly it has the aftersale support (and a 6 year unlimited mileage Jaguar warranty I think) of an established brand with an extensive dealer network. Success for Tesla or not, it is basically a two-legged stool that is missing the 'third-leg' of customer care, after-sale support, and brand-building. (Related - why buy a Range Rover Velar when you can get a Jag F-Type with free service for 6 years and a fantastic warranty?)

Elon Musk is like that popular/fun guy in your fraternity who you never hear from again once you leave the fraternity.

Its my increasing sense that once Tesla hands you the keys, they are not in a position to offer much in the way of customer service, commensurate with a $60,000 to $150,000 vehicle.

Not sure why people are directly comparing the iPace to the Model X.. the Model x is a 7-seater. They iPace is 5. So the upcoming Model Y from Tesla will be the direct competitor at probably start at $45k or so, well under the price of the Jaguar. It will be intersting to see how many iPac deliveries Jaguar can provide in real life, and once again, each iPace will be subject to individual dealer markup if manufactured numbers are small. I wouldn't be suprised dealers marking up a $90k iPace to $120k.

THe Base price of the upcomming Model Y - according to you - might start in the Mid-$45,000 range - but THOSE models are unlikely to be available for several years - since Tesla ALWAYS starts production with the most expensive versions first.

And I doubt that they will start that low to begin with.

AS far as the price of an I-Pace - again that is speculation that has no previous basis - as we do with Tesla. With The Audi coming in at $76,000 - I doubt the Jaguar will be used to gouge the public.

*IF* the Model Y is ever built (which would take 3 years to build a new factgory and require billions of investment that Tesla cannot currently afford), it will face competition from several dozen competing markets.

So not even worth mentioning any future Tesla models, especially in light of the ongoing criminal probe from the Justice Department and the SEC probe, both of which likely will prevent any necessary capital raise and will result in Ch 11 bankruptcy by Q1 next year.

I can't imagine any intelligent person would buy a car from Telsa now given the uncertainty of future warranty repairs, software updates, etc.

(my background: 17 years in corporate finance/investment banking/investment analysis).

You guys have been spouting the demise of Tesla for years - and it still hasn't happened - give it up already

Yes, but... Tesla is Tesla and has a loyal following that are converting new recruits every day. I have a lot of respect for Tesla, it is not easy for the existing car makers much less to launch a totally new brand from scratch... pretty amazing in this day and age.
