US Readies To Leave Canada Behind And Move Forward With Mexican Trade Deal
The United States is getting "very, very close" to having to move forward on its trade deal with Mexico without Canada, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said on Friday.

There is just over a week to go before an Oct. 1 deadline to publish the text of a deal to update the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the United States and Canada have still not agreed on terms, Hassett told Fox News Channel.

As we enter the time of new elections in the USA - I would like to point out that it is HIGHLY unlikely that any "agreement" of this type would be even brought to the floor of the Senate for a vote before the elections. Since ALL such treaties must be approved by the Senate - the speed at which this agreement is concluded still must require open hearings at the Commerce Committee - a vote to bring it to the floor - and then testimony on the Senate Floor. Since our congress is well known for the SPEED at which it considers such agreements - I think it is safe to assume it might come to vote after the next presidential election. And that president could just as quickly void the agreements that our current one has.

After November, Trump will be full speed ahead.

@MD- Smart money now says they lose both houses, too much chaos, and turmoil to predict otherwise, but I will wait and see what the voters decide. Incumbent President's don't pick up seats during mid-term elections as a rule. And if full speed ahead is different than holding both houses as they do now (with only 1 bill passed in nearly 2 years) having an even bigger majority means what for the remaining 2 years? One more bill passed?

If "smart money" means CNN then the money isn't that smart. Anderson Cooper stands in a ditch and exaggerates a flood story and calls it real news.

I for one am sick of the obstructionism of the Democrats. It's not even a political thing anymore. The Democrats simply want to keep anything good from happening and they were elected to serve ALL constituents.

The Republican party may also find some long-timers voted out BECAUSE they are not getting behind Trump. They are gambling that resisting Trump will keep them in office and I think they have a rude awakening.

@MD - When you control both houses, there is no external obstruction. It comes from within. A President can only sign bills that come across their desk. The GOP lacks unity and lacks any good ideas to move the country forward. They are the party of NO and have been at it so long they don't know much else. It has always been this way. 1 bill in 2 years illustrates this point. Having a greater majority in both houses will change nothing and you know it. The best thing that can happen for the American people is a blowout in November with the GOP losing its majority. How big is anyone's guess...

The only chaos is in the minds of the arrogant mental midgets and losers on the left. Trump is winning, America is winning and I'll bet the "blue wave" isnt going to be a wave at all..

Just more Trumpist rhetoric for folks who don't know any better. In case you're not aware:

- NAFTA was signed into law. That law states that no country can unilaterally withdraw from the deal. Read the documents if you doubt. Or just believe Faux News. Dummy Don can't just cancel NAFTA 'cuz he doesn't like it. Mind you, he's not very good at obeying law, as we well know :-/

- Canada is a sovereign nation. They can, and do, make trade deals on their own.

- The US enjoys a trade SURPLUS with Canada. Trumpty Dumpty was just pulling alternative "facts" out of his ass when he asserted there's a trade deficit. Again, facts aren't the forte for Dummy Don, his Party, and his followers. Trade data is freely available for those who look for it. Remember to include products AND services, 'cuz that's the way the world does it.

I just roll my eyes at Trumpanzees. Y'know, clean coal, climate change is a hoax, the Mexicans will pay for the wall, no collusion, and all. For a solid understanding of #45 and his devotees...

"Donald Trump, champion and avatar of the shallow state, has won power because his supporters are threatened by what they don't understand, and what they don't understand is almost everything. Indeed, from evolution to data about our economy to the science of vaccines to the threats we face in the world, they reject vast subjects rooted in fact in order to have reality conform to their worldviews. They don't dig for truth; they skim the media for anything that makes them feel better about themselves. To many of them, knowledge is not a useful tool but a cunning barrier elites have created to keep power from the average man and woman."

With respect to the above post, "data about our economy" includes domestic trade, international trade, NAFTA, etc. Why let facts get in the way when you have Fraud and Friends tell you what to think, or simply repeat what's echoing in your head?

I return you to AutoBreitbart, and more great stories about the latest exploits of our Glorious Leader, the "very stable genius".

I am calling bullshit on this one. The US needs Mexico for cheap labor to hedge against China in order to stay competitive against those cheap labor shithole countries. They also need Canada for her vast mineral resources that feed those American factories and wood for new home construction. Furthermore Canada is Americas best customer and you don't kill off profitable, lucrative business relationships with trade surplasses and vital, wholesale supply sources to feed your infrastructure and economy.

Trump is doing what he does best -negotiate and WILL get Murica a gooderest deal than the original NAFTA agreement and is using NYC mafia extortion tactics to expedite it along and good for him. This is just a big ass game of poker and someone is bluffing. The US does have serious leverage though and can and will command changes due to its sheer size and purchasing power and long term the US will prosper with more fair and balanced trade agreements long after Trumps 2nd term.

Our brain-dead, feminist, "peoplekind" drama school PM needs to drop the stupid supply chain management to appease the Yanks and expedite a close so we can all get back to mutual prosperity and collectively take on the real threat -China.

Canada auto tariffs would be bad for the RAV4, especially with the new model volume increase and being the best selling SUV in US. It could force Toyota to shift production to US or Mexico and those jobs will never return.
