BMW Cuts Outlook, Blames Trade Disputes and Emissions Costs
BERLIN—Shares in BMW AG BMW -5.88% fell by as much as 6% on Tuesday after the luxury car maker warned that emissions-related costs, product recalls and fierce price competition amid global trade disputes would dampen profit this year.

BMW said the main reason for the dimmer outlook was the cost of adjusting to new global rules for emissions testing to measure pollutants, greenhouse gas emissions, and fuel economy. The test, called world harmonized light vehicles test procedure, or WLTP, came into force in Europe in September and BMW racked up significant costs earlier in the year to adapt its vehicles to the new regime.

The profit warning comes amid a flurry of similar concerns from other companies in the sector, such as rival Daimler AG and supplier Continental AG , which have spoken out against disruptions to global markets and supply chains from political tensions and the U.S.-China trade dispute.

Several industry analysts saw BMW’s unexpected warning as a turning point in the industry, a sign that regulatory challenges and a volatile global trade environment would further hit sales and dent corporate profits. Analysts had expected weak auto industry performance in the three months to October to improve at the end of the year, but now fear it will continue.

“Today’s warning has extinguished the idea that the sector will rally again after a well-flagged soft third-quarter,” said Patrick Hummel, an automotive analyst at UBS.

Analysts cut their earnings outlook for BMW by about €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion), bringing consensus estimates down to about €9.7 billion.

Blame yourself, BMW head honchos... unwilling to look towards the future and being lazy, lazy, lazy, relying on dinosaur ICE technology and fat short term profits instead of biting the bullet years ago and developing EV technology. Now BMW, VW, and Benz find themselves years behind the fierce worldwide EV competition. All of the recent EV offerings revealed so far from Deutschland have been just pathetic. At least they can rely on the German Government to mandate domestic sales to prop up the industry, but that won't be enough to return to fat corporate profits from the rest of the world anytime soon. Maybe if the CEO's nad Senior Exec's can take a big paycut and use that money for faster R&D... nawww... fat chance on that.

As much as I like BMW (I've owned 4, and loved them all), BMW sales have been declining for a while. It's not a recent phenomenon. Perhaps the tried and true formula isn't working as well as it used to.

I wish them well, though. They are a noteworthy company.

When you dilute your very reason for success (The Ultimate Driving Machine) and don't move the design needle every second generation like years ago, your most loyal customers slowly look elsewhere. You may have expanded your sales into mass markets but mass market buyers chase lowest prices and lease costs and are not loyal. Get back to basics or settle for middle of the pack results. The most profitable auto makers are grounded in exceptional performance and great design. A space BMW once occupied but not now.

Blame the i3 and i8. And the boring 7- Series and a X7 eight years too late.

When you do all-new cars that look all-old, it's just desserts.

The Germans demand sales, the distributors (BMW NA) (BMW China) fake the unit sales through ever more elaborate punching schemes... BMW NA promotes a base version of the X3 & 3 Series that has vinyl interiors and no wood... no longer luxury cars.. the styling is so dated your neighbors would not know if you have a new X5 or a 6 year old X5, the 7 series is near luxury, not luxurious... all of the cost cutting, industry leading LOW (horrific) dealer relations and non-existent styling changes have started to have a tangible negative effect on the bottom line... not to mention class leading cost for maintenance and upkeep for the loyalty BMW customers have shown the brand and BMW wonders why people are buying everything but a new BMW... Corporate greed, ruthless behavior toward the dealers and IGNORANCE coupled with no accountability for bad product, BMW AG deserves to endure the same garbage they foist onto the public, dealers and anyone that supplies to the company... Fire the Idiot Harald Krüger or better yet inflict his ignorance on him and let him figure out how to make a living selling the shit he builds. Vision Next.. total abortion.
