DOA: Apple's Steve Wozniak Officially Announces The DEATH Of The Self Driving Car. Even BEFORE It's Here.

Wozniak made the comments at Mastercard's 'Connecting Tomorrow' event in Barcelona.

During his talk, he said he's 'lost faith' in the abilities of self-driving car technology and doesn't expect to see them used widely on the roads anytime soon.

'They have to drive on human roads,' Wozniak said, according to Arabian Business.

'If they had train tracks, [there would be] no problem at all. I don't believe that sort of 'vision intelligence' is going to be like a human.

According to Wozniak, autonomous cars will struggle with unforeseen circumstances that are common in a real-world driving scenario.

Do YOU agree? Is he RIGHT?

Yeah, I think he makes good points...I believe someone from BMW said something similar and Telsa fanboys were all over him.

I had always thought that autonomous vehicles would first be restricted to limited access highways that were equipped for this technology - and the idea that they would actually be on local roads was WAY WAY off into the future if at all. For certain metropolitan areas - making limited access highways that had controlled access and exit - along with faster speeds - could reduce commuting times - and make the highways safer by controlling distance between cars and eliminating that occasional aggressive driver/agent. Since virtually all the cars behavior could be controlled - likely from OUTSIDE the vehicle by the highway itself - you would essentially eliminate the "human error" part of the equation (I suppose you could pick your own media station).

THe biggest detriment to Autonomous vehicles remains the Insurance problem of Liability - especially in the case where it was a "vehicle software" problem instead of a clear operator error. ANd it will take years of court cases to establish case law in this regard.

Wozniak is a worthless footnote. Desperately overshadowed, he fights for crumbs.

That may be true, but you don't think his points are valid? Wozniak is still a smart guy, regardless of his other flaws.

If there is anyone that knows "Tech" it is Steve Wozniak, so MD, I disagree with you... he sees the realities and speaks from a position of clear understanding...
he has his shit together and I completely agree with him.. fully autonomous is decades away... if ever.

Name ANYTHING substantive he ever did that wasn't more likely the genius of Steve Jobs. Wozniak is tits on a boar.

Actually - it was JOBS who was the idea person - but it was Wozniak who essentially designed the original APPLE computer

Wozniak is the "George Harrison" of Apple i.e. not even remotely responsible for its success but over which you are supposed to fawn. His contributions to technology are nil. Jobs and Gates are the biggies.

Oof.

Matt, you're out of your depths on this one.

Woz was the engineer who made it all happen for Apple at the outset.

MD, you lost me with the "George Harrison" comment. Sure Lennon was talented, but the Beatles benefited from Harrison's unique contributions. It's not like he was Ringo or anything

If any noticed, trains continue to have crashes, show this can be fixed first.

just one look at the morons that infest the roads right now and I can tell you autonomous cars are already better than 1/4 of the drivers out there. The next generation software will be better than 1/2 the drivers. The "human" conditions cited by Woz are already an epic FAIL for better than 1/4 of human drivers I see on a daily basis... all over the road, running stop lights and signs, failure to signal, weaving dangerously in out of traffic, panic stops while texting or otherwise distracted, etc etc etc.

Why not develop flying cars that can be equipped with autopilot. Problems solved. ;-)

All of this self driving tech needs to stay in the lab for another 10 years so it can be perfected to work in all 4 seasons. Being largely camera based along with other tech like GPS and AI, I just don't see that ever happening.

If deaths can be prevented today, then I think it would be worth to release the tech as soon as possible. If it causes more issues than it solves, then we should wait.

The difficulty is predicting pedestrians and byclyes, so city driving may never work well enough.

I don't see how this technology can succeed with all the lawyers there are out there...once there are deaths then come the class action lawsuits against ... whom? The car mfr? the owner of the car? the software mfr...? All the above? How does will insurance companies insure when you're not holding the steerirng wheel?

I'll be surprised if this becomes the norm...

I've been using autopilot (level 2) for a week, and it handles highways pretty well, including merging and lane changes. I don't think we're that far off and might have some level 3 functionality in Teslas and Audis by the end of next year. For non-consumer cars, Waymo also has a solid level 4 solution that will roll out very soon.

Once it happens, the transition will be very quick.
