Model 3 Renders Luxury Market Irrelevant - Focus Now Is Mass Market Sales Numbers
Here in the EV world, the Tesla Model 3 tends to be compared to its perceived competitors in the luxury sedan market or the plug-in market. This is understandable, but is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Moving forward, the Model 3 will be leaving most EV and luxury competition behind.

Incorrect in every way.

Sorry to burst your bubble, everyone that spends some actual time in the Model 3 ends up liking it more than traditional cars.

The Model 3 was not a Luxury car - it was specifically built as a mass market car - and should not even be compared sales wise to real Luxury cars.

I do not understand why the agents here continue to push the Tesla as being an upper tier luxury vehicle when they are NOT - and simply do not have the "prestige" of a real Luxury class Vehicle.

It has EVERY feature you would come to expect from a Premium/Luxury car, at least with the $5k package. The interior is very comfortable, well designed, and panels have a nice feel to them. It's not a Bentley, but easily in BMW territory quality-wise.

Also, if you compare it with ALL cars... it just became the 5th best selling car in the US. If you look at revenue, it generated more sales than any other sedan in the US. When is everyone around here going to wake up and realize this.

Apparently it is competing with both the 3-series and lower end cars based on trade ins, so it is competing with a wide range of cars.

Tesla vehicles are expensive. That does not make them luxury vehicles. The fit and finish -- which is not even on par with GM products -- says so. So does their appearance, inside and out. Compare a Tesla with a Porsche, and you'll easily see what I mean.

Tesla's are for people with deep pockets who want an EV... and only the EV that "everybody" is talking about.

The price and the performance, the lack of engine noise, vibration and harshness the lack of engine oil and hot exhaust, and the presence of infotainment online navigation and level 3 driver assist makes them "premium" vehicles.

Want "luxury"?! Get a Rolls.

Fit and finish is definitely on par with GM at this point, at least for the last several weeks. Not so much even 2 months ago, but at least panel defects were fixed.

BS. Read the article. The car can complete multiple laps.

Barely behind the Giulia - a car with much wider tires which were destroyed during the lap. Model 3's much thinner tires were basically unscathed.

The price of the Model 3 is ridiculous, especially considering its poor build quality (judged the worst of any vehicle, edging out the Tesla Model X,a real dog) 4300 out of 5000 cars require repairs and 65% of those require one or more repair in the first month. Insurance premiums very high - a stupidly designed vehicle - designed to be assembled by robots.

Demand > Supply, so economics dictates the price is between just right and too low.

The Model 3 sales have been strong because there is no competition - yet. Tesla models aren't going to cross-shop with Nissan Leafs and Chevrolet Bolts. Will they cross shop with Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche? Yes, because those brands compete in the same premium and hip market Tesla is targeting.

Will Tesla Model 3 sales and Tesla sales overall continue on their growth track once the other German brands show up? I doubt it and Audi already has the eTron on the way with Porsche and Mercedes not too far behind.

Who is showing up? Audi is a year out and it will be limited production (20k/year), Porche is limited production (20k/year). There won't be real competition for 2-3 years, and given Tesla updates their cars every year... they won't be competing with the same car available today.

So, is it really a matter of Tesla cars being that desirable and good, or just the simple lack fo true all-EV competition (in "mainstream" categories of sedan and SUV) from any other premium brand? The only competition seems to be forthcoming from the Benz EQC and Audi e-tron. The only all-EV car I am aware of (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that is currently on sale is the i3 and that's a more niche vehicle with crappy range and a higher price tag.

I guess you missed earlier in my post when I mentioned "any other premium brand".

All untrue except for service which has gone downhill since the S for sure, should get better than they can keep up.

Despite continued posts to the contrary, the Tesla Model 3 continues to sell. And if production can keep pace and expand, it will hit ever higher sales figures. Things will get crazy for Tesla sales with the debut of the Model Y CUV. Hate if you want (it is all some of you are seemingly capable of, day in and day out), but their success has been hard fought and earned. Chapeau to the entire Tesla team.

It's a premium car, Tesla doesn't call themselves luxury either. It has every tech feature and then some you would find on an Audi/BMW/etc. Fit and finish is very nice, and very comfortable. Luxury is pretentious and old-school. An iPhone isn't a luxury phone (that would be the now dead Vertu), it's a premium phone.
