Consumer Reports Testing Ranks GM Cadillac's Super Cruise Semi-Autonomous Driving Above Tesla's Autopilot

Semi-autonomous features are increasingly prevalent in cars these days but also, as many have argued (including myself) possibly very dangerous. Today, Consumer Reports published their rankings of four of the most widely known semiautonomous systems, finding that Cadillac’s Super Cruise was the best and Volvo’s, well, not.

CR’s rankings take into account safety above all else, and, in particular, how well each system keeps drivers engaged, since Level 2 and Level 3 autonomous systems can give drivers a false sense of security.

Idiotic comment.

Seriously, you must be insane. Read the article Spies are linking to. Tesla has the best lane keeping and autonomous functionality of ANY car you can buy right now. They were knocked on driver attention restrictions.

Civic or Corolla does not have ANY lane keeping, at best they just beep when you go over the line. Do you understand the difference between a car controlling the wheel and driving versus beeping? Just curious.

no surprise here... Tesla is world class at Hype.. not at building cars that deliver on the hype... GM may be slow and ungainly, produce moderately uninspired product, but they get the car business and they will like the 1000 Lb. Gorilla eventually beat Tesla at the engineering game, whether they can match the hype is unknown.. but not likely, so Musk keeps us thinking about his cars, and GM makes the product that should get the hype... the media not the car companies determine who gets millions in free press.. lately Tesla and Musk are winning that game... but not forever... once there are 150,000 model 3's on the road and the product proves the media hype is not in-sync with the actual product, then maybe people will learn which company is really playing the long game and not the press...

Thanks for the heads up, CR. Now there are two "autonomous" systems I distrust :-)

Cadillac has one big feature I like, the camera watches your eyes and you do not need to have your hands on the wheel if your eyes are straight ahead. Tesla requires you keep your hands on the wheel every 30 seconds or so (the benefit there is is being able to quickly do something in the car without having to pay attention if you are stuck in traffic).

If you look at specific scoring of the report here: https://electrek.co/2018/10/04/super-cruise-versus-tesla-autopilot/

Autopilot had the highest "Capability and Performance" rating as well as the highest "Ease of Use." They were only ranked 2nd because of a low "Keeping Driver Engaged Score." If you're a responsible driver, Autopilot is a better system.

Read the safety reports, on AP you are half as statistically likely of getting into a crash.

Cadillac limits its advanced driving mode to specially (LiDAR) mapped roads, which probably needs frequent updates.

Yup, I tested autopilot on a random street and it worked just fine (which you shouldn't do). They aren't as far as people think from true self driving.
