CAR WARS! The $50,000 Question: WHICH Is BEST? Audi Q5 vs. BMW X3 vs. Mercedes GLC-Class
If you're shopping for the likes of an all-new, moderately priced luxury sport-utility vehicle, then do I have the story for you, Spies. That's because our friends over at CAR recently published a showdown between the big three German auto manufacturers.

In this review, you get to read a comparison of what makes each of the following stand out: The Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.

Having experienced them, they're all quite good but as CAR points out there's slight variation. And we're pretty sure it will matter to you down the line. Whether it's the driving experience or the vehicle's in-car technology, these differences chalk up when you spend upwards of $50,000.

IF you'd like to learn the ins and outs of each of these luxury SUVs, I highly recommend checking out the full review on CAR — via the link below. But if you just want to get down to brass tacks, check out the publication's verdict right here.

Verdict

All three are desirable, all suffer minor flaws, and they’re subtly different in character. Crucially, there is no bad choice, and it seems almost unfair to pick a loser. The Mercedes is extremely refined, delivers the greatest performance, and we turned up the most affordable lease deals. It’s a car I’d happily live with, but I find myself leaning towards either the BMW or the Audi, both in terms of style and driver appeal.

It’s a close-run thing, but the BMW’s combination of space, sharper dynamics and superior infotainment ultimately edges it over the line. Just stick with the X3’s standard steering and turn up your Johnny Marr album to drown out that engine.

Again - this is a case where Mercedes polled its buyers - who overwhelmingly chose refinement and luxury over other things - and yet - Mercedes also manages to lead in the performance categories as well.

The BMW may be more "fun" to drive - but BMW makes 3 year cars - if you want something to last longer. In addition - they apparently are still making the same body they did a decade ago.

Audi is in a lower class than the other two - I do not even see why people continue to try to bring it upmarket when it is still second tier.

Agreed, Tom. Mercedes seems to understand its demographic the most out of all of the premium brands. More importantly, Mercedes understands itself as a brand.

Soooo...@runbuh you did all that info gathering to show the bmw was a few tenths of a second faster to 60? If BMW brands themselves as THE performance brand, you may not want to share those figures lol

At the end of the day, soccer moms, secretaries, junior execs, and instagram/youtube models aren’t looking for a cute Ute for the fastest zero-60, they want the badge appeal, comfort, luxury, and successful image....Benz checks all the boxes and leaves performance to the AMG 63 models to handle their light work.

Benz is playing CHESS not CHECKERS

The GLC43 has been recorded as low as 4.2 secs to 60.

Mazda CX9 Signature, loaded. Still well under $50K. Really great SUV.

But even $40K is too much for a Mazda.

Regarding the 3 compared, I would go elsewhere.

The Dodge Journey so obviously should have been included.

The biggest letdown for the RDX is its exterior styling. As a quasi-premium brand, it doesn't distinguish itself enough from the CX-5 or Santa Fe and even mimics the Terrain in C/D pillar and taillights treatments.
