With No Dog In The Hunt - New Lexus Ads Seek To Thwart EV Adoption
Lexus  has gone round and round regarding EVs for years. The automaker’s focus has been primarily on traditional (no plug) hybrids, as well as hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Time and time again there’s talk about a changing of priorities, but it never really comes to fruition. This is not to say that the Toyota Prius Prime isn’t capturing some success in the segment (meanwhile Toyota Mirai sales are nearly non-existent), but when it comes to Toyota’s luxury brand — Lexus — there’s not much visible progress.

Why would Lexus need to do anything? According to the geniuses in this forum, Tesla will be bankrupt 6 months ago.

I'll be mightily surprised if TSLA is still around in 5 years, without being bought out or "partnered", perhaps by a huge Chinese consortium. I'll be shocked if EVs go the way of the dodo.

LEXUS has some valid points. BYW Mirai? What ever happened to the Mirais?

I see them once and a while in the Bay Area, they are around. Super ugly car, very limited refilling options even here.

They are so behind the curve right now it is insane--especially considering they were leaders in the Hybrid era.

"No need to plug in!!!!" cries Lexus.. lol funny. As if plugging in a car at your own house or a Supercharger is scary. Every 4 days or so I plug in my Model 3 to the 14-50 NEMA drier outlet in my garage and just let it charge overnight. Hey Lexus, what is scary if you think about it is sticking a nozzle and pumping 20 gallons of highly flammable explosive liquid that stinks like a chemical factory into your gas tank and having the resulting exhaust gases able to poison and kill you back in your own garage. Now THAT'S scary.

There is no obvious EV market out there.

With MAYBE the exception of the Model 3 - many of which deposits are for a model that apparently does not exist - no one is standing in line for EVs - and for the most part they sell in small quantities compared to the total Vehicle market. A large percentage of those sales are heavily subsidized with Tax incentives as well. Take away the Tax incentives and other "perks" - (like dedicated lanes use) - and the market is apparently filled with those willing to spend full price without tax benefits.

Lexus is advertising against a "future" product at best and even the most optimistic projection I have seen does not see EVs with 5% of the total market.

When there is obvious competition in the market place from a number of well known companies (Only Gm and Nissan really qualify for that - because they do not depend on EV sales only) - then we might see a difference - but right now - the real EV market is at least 20 years away - maybe more. WE currently do not have the electric generation capacity to support a large number of them - nor do the number of charging station approach the number of gas stations yet.

You're delusional if you don't think there is an EV market. People that switch to EVs don't go back to ICE, it is a one way street and you see that reflected in climbing EV sales month after month.

This seems really short-sighted.

Electrification is the future.

This is Lexus trying to make believe like they have a good portfolio for that future, when what they have a series of stop-gap half-measures. I have a lot of good things to say about Lexus, but this isn't one of them.

And they're "introducing" it like it's something new? Are they going to make a watch and say "introducing the wearable clock"?

Lexus should have a swoopy coupesedan EV on the market to replace the truly terrible GS for the price of a 5 Series.

If they did that and kept the price tightly focused, they'd smear the Model S.

Toyota has more experience with batteries in cars than anyone else. Being 2nd only to Model 3 with the Prime isn't bad, and as long as the tax credits roll it is the smartest hybrid buy.

I don't think the self-charging hybrid tagline will work for Lexus. Much better is Electrified Performance.
