BMW Claims The 85% Of It's Lineup Will Still Rely Of Fossil Fuels In 2030
For the most part, BMW has always been at the forefront of vehicle powertrain and handling development. The Munich based carmaker has been one of the top dogs in the game for the last 40 years. However, concerning electrification and advanced technology in recent years, the Bavarian carmaker doesn’t impress as it once used to. Currently, everyone in the motoring industry seems to agree that electric is the way forward. However, BMW is taking this a path a bit more cautiously.

And that is nonsense too

Last time I looked the overwhelming majority of ELECTRIC power is produced using fossil fuels -

So unless we see Nuclear powered or Solar powered cars - the actual percentage of Fossil Fuel powered cars will be 90% or higher

They're probably right. 2030 is only 12 years away....it will take a while to build up a universal charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, and for the technology to allow for charging batteries fully within 5-10 minutes. This is necessary to allow EVs to take the majority of the market.

12 years is a really, really long time. That's 2.5 traditional car generations. If 85% of their cars are still ICE by then, they're done. An ICE motor will never catch up to an EV powertrain at this point. With economies of scale, EVs will continue to drop in price while ICE prices stagnate. They have about 6 years tops to get it together (and I think they will) before Tesla, VW/Audi/Porsche, and the Chinese EV companies (NIO) walk all over them.

I appreciate BMW's honesty in not trying to sell us the "everything will soon be electric" story.

So they won't be taking market share from Tesla.

Actually I would rather they try the best they can to give Tesla serious competition. The way it is now, it's like Tesla goes to the game only to find the other team didn't show. It's uncool for big players like BMW and VAG to keep finding excuses instead of taking the challenge head on.

Agree with both of your comments =)

So BMW deliberately plans their obsolescence.
