2020 Ford Bronco may come with a six- or seven-speed manual transmission from Getrag
More and more vehicles are using automatic transmissions to send power from the engine to the wheels. Even supposed sporty cars have been ditching manual transmissions in favor of automatic gearboxes. But the upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco could come fitted with a manual transmission, according to a report by Jalopnik.

Citing a number of sources privy with the plans, Jalopnik reported that Ford is tapping Getrag to develop a new manual gearbox for the 2020 Ford Bronco. The partnership between Ford and Getrag to develop a new manual transmission for the Bronco isn't surprising

Actually - now that FORD is moving to be the TRUCK company - having some Manual Transmissions available might seem like a good move - however - it adds costs that people forget - like emissions certifications.

Still - I think that they will sell all of the first year Broncos they can make - regardless of the equipment

As the resident Tranny guy -how does a manual compare to an autobox price wise on a new car. It must be significantly cheaper than an automatic or does the extra hardware (pedal and mounting points) negate the cost savings or is it a volume thing?

TomM: I agree with you IF .... the Bronco looks like the one in the article. I have seen other renderings that are not so good.

We've been told that the online renders are completely inaccurate.

It would think a manual in a 2020 SUV would be highly unlikely. With advanced features like crawl control, hill descent control etc, an 8-10 speed automatic is much more in keeping with current component choices used across a fleet of vehicles at a global automaker.

I love manuals, but I am the first to admit that today's automatics are simply better. Even at the track, an automatic with flippers can easily shift faster than a human with a manual. And I'm damn good at manuals. The excellent driver assist features that are being designed into vehicles makes it so that the transmission needs to be a seamless part of the equation.

Another box huh? Nissan Cube, Honda Elenent, Hummer, Scion SC,some Mercedes SUV and Wranger but only the Soul would be the copycat allowing the FJ Cruiser to get away with it since it also has a Japanese badge.
