Does The All-new Porsche 911 (992) Sound Like A STUD or DUD To You In This Prototype Ridealong?
The Porsche 911 is one of the greatest sports cars on the planet.

That's not even an opinion. At this point it's fact.

With over 50 years of iteration, one wonders how the boys and girls from Stuttgart are able to deliver consistently. With the all-new 911 on the way — dubbed the 992 — it is expected to bring the heat. Frankly, Porsche has no other choice.

But what will make this generation 911 better than the preceding ones? Will it be better, necessarily? It depends on what you value, Spies!

If you overweight speed, technology, space and a more muffled experience, this may be the car for you. We know this because our friends over at CAR magazine went for a ridealong with Porsche in a prototype vehicle.

According to CAR, the Carrera will come with a 3.0-liter good for 377 horsepower and the Carrera 2S will boast 444 horsepower. The latter will hit zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds thanks to PDK.

New Porsche 911 (992): verdict

The 911 is awash with tech, but from the passenger seat at least it looks like Porsche has directed the new technology for good. The new 992 is more compliant, techier and easier on the CO2 regs – but skip through a handful of menus and it’s arguably more aggressive than the car before. Cruiser or bruiser? Swipe left or right.

The full width tail lights look wonderful.

@MD- If all the models have the 4S styling, wide hips and full width lights, the 4S is kinda reduced to a box check, do I want 4wd or not? It is no longer special.

Can you afford one? Honest question. If a person can't then the discussion is moot. If you can afford one and are buying it for how wide its ass is, then you don't need a 4S.

@MD- Love one, but they have been off my list for years, as I am not going to drive 45min-60min to go get it serviced. I can get anything I want (within reason) in a 20 minute drive from my house. I will wait for that Corvette SUV you keep promoting. Fun to drive and room for the dog.

Thankfully, the Porsche and Corvette are still true to the spirit of the genuine sportscar.

What's with the new 992 large 'black band' areas on the sided quarter windows? It blocks visibility and looks cheap and offensive. The rear stationary side window shape is especially appealing from the classic 911 design and the black bands defeat the original good looks. Porsche made an error using the black glass bands.

I would think one should at least get the Turbo/Turbo S if he/she is getting a 911, why bother with anything less.

Well, one reason is that the Turbo/Turbo S are really big bucks. Easy to find TurboS well above $200K. For street driving, the 991 GTS and the 991 T can give as much or more thrills than the 3.8 turbos.

Clearly you have never driven a base or 4s model. They are both more sports car than most people can handle or get near the limits of the car.

Like the other two commenters note, the Carrera and C2S are brilliant vehicles in their own right.

Frankly, I am not a huge fan of the Turbo with or without the S. Frankly, they're boring.

I have exactly zero fear that Porsche is gonna screw up the 992.

And taking all 911s down the fat ass road allows the Cayman to branch out. I'd rather have a Cayman anyway.

OMG! No shaped exhaust tips or floating roof? WTF?

True, other iterations of their model line are superb drivers, but nothing beats the neck snapping acceleration of a Turbo IMO.
