Is Your NEXT Purchase Going To Be An SUV or TRUCK? If So, What Speaks To YOU?
Spies, an all-new age is in full effect. That would be the sport-utility vehicle and truck era.

In recent years we've been on top of the systemic shift away from conventional sedans to SUVs. While Agent 001 was early to recognize the move, we're actually seeing major disruption today. If buyers aren't motivated to get behind the wheel of a Tesla Model 3, they want to know everything there is about a Tesla.

"What do you think of Tesla?"

"Have you driven a Tesla?"

"Would you buy a Tesla?"

On the other hand, if new car shoppers aren't going electric, they're scaling up. While SUVs are "in," I've been fielding more requests about vehicles like the latest RAM 1500 and Ford F-150.

Although we're well aware of our keen EV audience, we're a bit more interested in what your next ride will likely be. That's because we know the Spies are taste makers.

So, I've got to ask: Will your next purchase be an SUV or truck? If so, WHICH SUV or truck has caught your attention?

The next purchase will be a Ranger for the teenager. I'm very much anticipating the Bronco and will likely get one if they don't screw it up.

I second that on the next Bronco

Current fleet 2011 BMW M3 sedan (daily driver), 2016 Acura MDX (wife) comes off lease in Feb-Mar 2019 and next to replace. Also 2016 Mazda CX-5 and 2007 Honda CR-V. The SUV/Crossover trend is real. The MDX will be replaced with a similar vehicle with current considerations being 2019 MDX, RDX (? too small), Merc GLE400, BMW X5, Audi Q7, others?

Side note, M3 is in the body shop for 3 weeks after driving over some debris at highway speed (6K in damages) that wouldn't have even phased an SUV with 4-5in more of ground clearance. Also, had a Ford Expedition for few days as a rental and can't understand how anyone could drive one of these regularly unless they need to haul 7-8 people or a serious amount of sh$t. It actually has reasonable pickup but the brake and throttle response is non-linear, the stopping distance is way too long, and it can't corner anywhere near as fast as a mid or small size SUV.

Was it the all-new Expedition or the last-gen model?

Sorry to hear about your M3. Hoping it comes back to your liking and better than ever.

@dstampfer Clearly you do not have a family. The options are a queasy-riding minivan or a truck based family truckster. The Expedition is very much a family vehicle. It is also completely illogical to expect an Expedition to handle like a car. What planet are you on?

This was a 2017 Expedition- didn't expect it to drive like a car but would think it would be safe to drive.... In the wet, the power overwhelms the traction unless you feather the gas, the traction control kicks in and cuts the power, but somehow this doesn't restore traction and any attempt to come off the gas and counter steer causes more loss of directional control...

Yes, I've recently become an empty nester and have little reason to carry a big family. I do see the size appeal for some...

M3 hopefully back to normal in next 2 days

I am considering the new Cayenne or a F150/250 as I like the utility of a truck for all the projects that I'm working on and a massive gut and rebuild home project that I was stupid enough to start.

With almost everyone here driving SUV or Pick Ups I don't really want to be in a car anymore which has visibility challenges and lesser protection in the event of a collision with all these larger land yachts on the road.

MINI is still able to earn top safety marks despite their size and the growing size of other cars, but I totally hear your concerns about other behemoths on the road.

Why would I need to pray? If it isn't what I want, I'd just get something else.

I have found that the ability to hold several sheets of 4x8 foot plywood INSIDE the vehicle - and the ability to convert the vehicle from a hauler of things - to a hauler of people without having to take out seats - makes my Chrysler Mini-Van with Stow and Go seats the ideal replacement for BOTH these vehicles. The Front wheel drive will get me there in snow and I do not really go off road. THe V-6 has plenty of power - and I get 30 mpg on long highway trips.

I have had this one for a little over 2 years and already have over 70,000 miles on it - and likely will go for a Pacifica to replace it soon. The Pacifica has independent rear - so it drives even smoother too. I find people who complain about the ride of a Mini-van - and then prefer a huge truck based SUV are kidding themselves.

I'm not a truck guy. I'm not really an SUV guy either. However I concede that this is what most manufacturers are producing these days. I require and SUV that drives and corners like a sports car. The problem is I'm tired of German. What make comes the closest to handling like a Porsche but is not one?
