That EV You Bought To Save The Planet Probably Polluted More Than A Conventional Car BEFORE It Got To You

Beneath the hoods of millions of the clean electric cars rolling onto the world's roads in the next few years will be a dirty battery.

Every major carmaker has plans for electric vehicles to cut greenhouse gas emissions, yet their manufacturers are, by and large, making lithium ion batteries in places with some of the most polluting grids in the world.

Yes, it does not eliminate pollution, it just moves it. Add the trillions of dollars needed for infrastructure to support EVs and it does not add up.

As much as I like the idea of a clean EV, one of the big problems is where you get your electricity to power it. In the US, about 70% of all electricity is generated by burning stuff, including garbage (!) and that alleged "clean" coal (!!).

Easily verified facts (and a little math) depict a real-world picture in which a guy who drives an EV in Pennsylvania, getting his EV's electricity from coal-fired electric-generating plants, has about 20% higher CO2 emissions per mile (on average) than the guy driving a comparable diesel in Colorado. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, recognized by most of the world as an integral part of human-caused pollution and its contribution to the planet's catastrophic climate change. Cue the Chinese Climate Change Hoax conspiracy theorists ;-)

This info is NOT brought to you by oil companies as anti-EV FUD. It's simply facts, which you can verify yourself, if you just do some basic research, and have Grade School math skills.

EV's make environment sense in markets that have electricity sources from renewables and clean sources, and where an EV meets the consumer's mission requirements. Economic sense for the owner is a different matter, especially for folks in low-income brackets.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, the majority of our power is generated by hydro, wind or other clean(er) sources. There's a small percentage of coal, and it's reducing all the time. Solar becomes more practical as you move south. Although I have seen a small number of solar installations on homes around me. Not sure how cost-effective they are, since the sun doesn't typically shine all that much in Seattle. :)

I just depends on where you live. 60% of the electricity in Canada is generated by Hydro sources. Nuclear energy production is 15.8%, Natural Gas provides 10%, Coal is 10% and others add up to 5%. Whether or not you believe in global warming is besides the point. Cleaner air is good for everyone. And the sooner coal and other polluting forms of electrical production are phased out, the better.

Batteries are mostly recycled, so I'm not too concerned about that. Can't say about solar panels. Never really looked into them, since Seattle isn't the known capital of sunshine. :)

This site is a joke that survives by catering to a bunch of morons who have convinced themselves that global warming is a hoax and ICEs are the future.

Carlos: Global Warming is a hoax. Al Gore got wealthy off of that.

I will keep driving around in my diesel pick up truck with stacks on each side of the cab. CHEERS !!!!

Actually -- there is ABSOLUTELY no doubt that the climate is warming.

Ask ANYONE who lives in a home that fronts on an Ocean - The water levels have risen - dramatically - Docks that were once safely above water are now even with it or already under water. THis is due to the melting of the polar ice caps - because of GLOBAL WARMING. I do not need scientists to verify it - I have PROOF of it right in the backyard of my summer home. AND the rise is happening all over the globe - not just in my backyard. It has happened in FLorida in my brothers summer home as well.

THere is an island community off the coast of Maine - that has lost 1/3 of its above water territory due to the problem - and might have to be moved to the mainland because it is in danger of going completely under water.

WE do not need scientific instruments to prove Global Warming - anyone who has a BRAIN and can SEE - can see the effects of it in person. Only those who have NO BRAINS deny it is happening. It is - the problem is not that - the problem is WHY. Today virtually all scientists accept that the greenhouse gasses of our industrial economies around the world is the cause - there are a few holdouts for a natural change that the earth weather cycles has - but fewer than 3% of the scientists support that anymore. Natural or not - it IS HAPPENING and the rise of the waters is accelerating.

I do not know where you got your statements from - I have not seen anyone suggest global cooling -provide published statements from a scientific source.

IF you were in danger of losing your property to the ever rising sea levels - you would not consider it funny - but as the Oceans rise - more and more of the coast gets covered in water - and if you have an Ocean front property there is NOTHING you can do about it - and no way to prevent losing more and more of your land to the ocean.

There is actually ample evidence that global warming is not real.

Let me see if I understand this..... the water levels have risen on ocean front properties .... or was it that the constant thrashing of water has eroded the ocean front properties and that is interpreted as the water level rising.

Those that believe in Global Warming should start walking and ditch their cars, use no electricity, etc. You guys are quiet about the Al Gore get rich quick scam....speak up please

please watch the video and read the article to help wade through all the FUD funded by the likes of the Koch Bros and Big Oil. ...Quick synopsis- current EV manufacturing does create larger carbon footprint at first manufacture over gas cars but quickly the carbon footprint difference is erased within the first year of car operation. Over the average lifetime of the vehicles the carbon footprint of EV is far far less than a gas car. And in the end the EV battery is recycled. Also please note EV manufacturing is getting cleaner every year that ticks by. This is the result of a 2 year study by actual scientists using real world data- not some corporate funded FUD machine. The results and methodology used are freely available.
