Does THIS Ford Teaser Hint A Future Mustang Hybrid Is In The Works?

Ford Motor Company dropped its first Bryan Cranston-filled “Built Ford Proud” commercial today, offering the Breaking Bad alumnus an opportunity to cast aspersions at the company’s rivals, including industry startups. It’s filled with Ted Talk-bashing, futurespeak-trashing bravado linked together with a thread of get ‘er done, implying that talk is cheap, and real progress takes hard work.

You can count on Ford to build the future — that’s the message here.

Not sure I’m getting Ford’s message about actually “building” the future when they seem to be amongst the last major car companies to develop anything future-related like EVs and self-driving capability.

They are still stuck in "retro" mode.

Seriously though, I think an electric Mustang makes sense for Ford. It currently has nothing to show for in the emerging EV market. The Mustang has been bullied by the likes of Camaros and Challengers. The GT already costs $40K or more with modest interior and technology. Its performance and features can easily be met by a decent EV at similar price sans the engine noise. Forget the 4 cylinder ecoboost junk, or the ancient V6 - no self respecting Mustang driver should drive that POS.

The EV Mustang can serve as a spring board for other models in the Explorer and Bronco lineup, even the F-series. Not sure if Ford will adopt the "platform sharing" approaches by the German.

I think this is the "Mach I" "Mustang crossover EV" thing because the front looks huge

Even though there is uncertainty in the US market regarding Mileage standards - it is likely California will not change theirs which means 13 other states will not as well - and regardless - the march goes on in Europe and other areas.

Eventually - until there is a major efficiency breakthrough - like the opposed cylinder engine - the only real way to meet these standards will be through regular Hybridization. Properly done - they actually are reasonable transportation vehicles - and I am sure that there will be PERFORMANCE based versions as well.

Car makers will build to the highest requirement first - and then sell what they need to in other markets.

This is the front view of the new BEV suv with Mustang styling coming in 2020.

Ford is dumping all cars except Mustang so they are expanding the Mustang brand with convertible coupe "4-Door Sports Car" and this BEV suv for 4 vehicles vs. 2 today.
Plus the 2.3 Ecoboost hybrid will come in 2021 on New Mustang platform including AWD
