Mercedes Clears The Way For Maybach To Take On Bentley With New Models

When Daimler revived the Maybach brand, it launched it back onto the market with its own dedicated limousines. Those have since given way to spruced-up versions of existing Mercedes models, but according to Autocar, the uber-luxe marque could produce its own unique vehicles again in the future.

The long-term plan, outgoing Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche told Autocar, is to have Maybach “stand on its own two feet, like AMG.” The performance division, which stands as a separate pillar within the Mercedes brand alongside Maybach, offers the GT coupe, roadster, and new four-door, and will soon launch the One hypercar.

My S650 Mayback already competes favorably with Bentleys in its price range as well as Higher. I have said that its ride is close to the Rolls Phantom - and above the Mulsanne. And the V-12 is still something that Bentley can compete with that W-16 is not even close to being this refined.

However - at some point - Mercedes is going to need to reduce the number of models it produces - since they often have several models in he same space. Some of the will fall by the wayside.

I personally really don't car if they have separate Maybach models - (THey already do - they do not make a non-Maybach version of MY car) - at this level - I do not need to spend another $100,000 for a name.

Your car is an S-Class with an extended wheelbase and a V-12

Quite honestly Tom I am thrilled you have a 650, its impressive as this car is expensive, I for one am more than fine with this type of expense and "consumption". It does say alot about how Capitalism has benefitted you. That said with all the enviro-crap and liberal tripe you and Steve spew how do you possibly justify a car weighing over 5000lbs that gets 13mpg. Shouldn't you consume less fuel for other and spew less toxins? Again, I'm all for it as are most conservatives... but its seems incredibly hypocritical... reminds me of reallly all lib-turds whose creed is: "do as I say, not as I do" or "accuse others of doing exactly what you, yourself, are doing..."

This is exactly how Maybach was supposed to launch the first go around. Mercedes introduces it as a trim level first with the S Class which has proven to be a huge success, especially globally, and a bit of a thorn in Rolls Royce and Bentley’s side as the S Class offered superior tech/reliability at a significant discount to rivals.

Now that High End Mercedes clients have gotten warmed up to the Maybach trim, it only makes sense to give them more options across new models to get excited about.

Well done Benz

If Mercedes approaches this the way they are approaching the AMG line of cars, then there will still be overlap with the rest of the Benz lineup. The Panamericana (?) grille from the AMG GT is not on all full-on-AMG cars in the rest of the Mercedes range. The AMG GT 4Dr shares platform with the E-Class and shares its front dashboard/console as well.

Fortunately Mercedes has no plans to bring Maybach trims to entry models as AMG does, however Maybach is moving higher end with a return to the vision of a stand alone brand/models.

The grille you are speaking of is in the works for NEW AMG models, all of which have not been refreshed or replaced yet which includes all new models waiting in the wings for GLE/GLS/GLA/CLA and more, E class awaiting mid cycle facelift soon and S an all new Model on the heels of the forthcoming CLA

You misread/misunderstood what I posted.
I never said Maybach would move to entry level models and I am well aware of the how the grille is being used on AMG models.

You didn’t quite comprehend what I posted. I never claimed you thought Maybach would move to entry level models however, you did bring up overlapping which has been a result of the way Mercedes has executed AMG as of late which opened the door to make my own comparison of Maybach to AMG

Carry on

So why did you respond with "Fortunately Mercedes has no plans to bring Maybach trims to entry models", as a direct response to my post? Anyway....

And, sorry, I meant to say that the AMG Panamericana grille is "noW" on all full-on AMG cars for the brand.

Because you did not say exactly how the AMG brand overlapped so I could respond however I wanted adding my own take.

Get out of your feelings and off your keyboard....then come back.

Thanks

They need to hire better designers, their current offerings are bland and/or outright yawn-inducing, and not even on the same levels as the designs from Bentely/RR.

AMG doesn't stand on its own two feet. It's a trim level.

AMG has built its own engines for some time and recently taken over complete designs from ground up starting with the GTS and GT4. Wouldn't underestimate AMG or next generation, stand alone Maybach line.Performance wise they are on a roll.

Mercedes could use a revived Maybach line up to create works of art or esoteric automobiles, like the coupe pictured. Short runs. Huge dollars. Somewhere between Rolls and Bugatti. If they are unique they will find customers. Sadly in 2018 they will be BEV's or hybrids. A V-16 powering a coupe like this would be really something.

First time 'round when MB tried to revive the Maybach brand, the public saw it for what it really was: a gussied up Mercedes S-Class. Eventually, Mercedes conceded, and they sold a "Maybach Edition" of the S-Class.

So is MB going to pull a Phaeton by repeating this story?

Then you factor in that the ONLY claim to fame for Maybach is that it was Hitler's parade car and the whole venture is pointless.

CanadianComments, your comment is spot on. In fact, Cadillac should do this with one or more of their concepts. Make it a short run with a V-12 or 16 to be attention getting. We see great concepts and then, oh, it's a CT6 with a 4cyl.
