Tesla Model 3 Performance Vs BMW M3 - Which Would Be The Better Daily Driver?
or every vehicle that even remotely wants to call its self a performance machine, it’s always going to be compared with the ultimate performance sedan: the BMW M3. After all, the M3 is one of the best high-performance machines money can buy and the BMW M3 has held that title for several decades.

However, with the advent of the Tesla Model 3 Performance, the M3 may no longer be the only option if you’d like to go with a high-performance sedan for your daily driver.

It's a no brainer - Model 3 Performance with Upgrade package (P+). Tires at 40 psi for ideal daily driving, 42 or higher for AX. For track driving I would need wheel/tire upgrade and wait for Track Mode.

Owning the Tesla deprives the owner from the thrill and pleasure of refueling the vehicle with gasoline. It is an American institution.

M3, the way I drive the Model 3's brakes wouldn't last long, this car cannot be taken to the track. Plus the M3 will have much higher resale value at the end since the M3 is the benchmark that everyone aims at this price range. It also looks better and has a much sweeter sound coming from under the hood than that of a golf cart. BTW why is the paint so expensive on the Tesla?

BTW I still think the Model 3 is awesome but not when compared to an M3, maybe to a Camry or Accord.

The Performance brakes on the Model 3 are on par with the BMW. I wouldn't recommend bringing the base Model 3 to the track though without upgrading the pads.

Yeah, sorry but the Model 3 only loses 3-5% of it's power after many laps, even then it is still faster that most cars. Batteries have come a long way since the S.

The article is strongly skewed toward toward the Tesla. How about, time to refuel? M3 under 5 minutes. Tesla, close to an hour. Interior quality foes to the M3. What about lap times. Zero to 60 is only one measure.

Agent009, why all the promotion for Tesla?

Check other car sites, Tesla is the company making most of the news right now while other companies are stagnating/shrinking for the most part.

" How about, time to refuel? M3 under 5 minutes. Tesla, close to an hour." Time to refuel/recharge a Tesla car takes about 10 seconds to plugin the charger cable in the garage while the owner is rest in his/her bed. Time to refuel a BMW M3 is driving to gas station, refuel it, pay for it, driving home so the total is much longer than 10 seconds.

How's about maintenance ? Tesla needs an oil change every 7-10k miles ?

SanJoseDriver, most other car companies are shrinking?? Check out the global sales numbers. Tesla numbers are a seriously small fraction (under 1 percent) and you are talking like they just vaulted past Toyota. One good quarter does not make it a win yet.

What's the news? That is has a Model 3, a Model X and a Model S? It has autopilot? Big deal. All three are the ugliest cars on the road to start with. Their interiors are nothing short of crap. I went to buy a Model S. At $165,000.00 USD, I want a nice car. Try sitting in the back seat of that thing. It has a big screen. Check. It is like a rollercoaster at take off. 0-60 in like 2.9 sec. Check. BUT THAT IS IT. Tesla is not a car I would ever buy.

Relax son, the topic only serves to troll, and most of you fell for it, hard.

Both cars serve their purpose, and they're cheap enough that you can switch to either right away should it pleases you, or just get both.

Since I didn't know what VEGAN leather was I Google it and discovered that "Items that qualify as vegan or faux leather can be produced from materials as varied as cork, barkcloth, glazed cotton, waxed cotton, paper, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyurethane. It is those last two materials that are the most common materials used for synthetic leather." Tesla is charging you $1,000 for pleather?

yes, but Tesla's pleather (vinyl) is so much better and forward thinking.

Tesla will not provide/allow its vehicles to be featured in comparison tests so until some real world, third-party data is obtained, the comparison is moot.

It has been well-established that the BMW M3/M4 can run, reliably, on a track and run many times on a track. Aside from "puffery" from Tesla, there is no real world data on how durable a Model 3 would be on a track.

Tesla is all here-say.

Geez - I'm not a Motor Trend subscriber so didn't see that. Can we say "field hand-picked by Tesla"?

Motor Trend is not really known to be the most un-biased automotive publication (belated congrats to the Model S - 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year).

Hmmm - we will approve a comparison test if you include a pre-production E-Jaguar SUV (why not trash it before its even been widely reviewed?) and the only car less reliable than a Tesla, an Alfa-Romeo Quadrifoglio. OK - Chairman Musk approves the comparison test if those are THE ONLY CARS INCLUDED.

Spin it any way you like but the Giulia is widlely regarded as the best performing car in its class.

And the people regarding the Giulia crapstorm as the best in class are either PR people or they are the press-junket, boobs-and-booze crowd that want to be invited back for more free prostitution.

116 mpge compared to 20mpg. 3.3sec 0-60 compared to 3.9sec..

number of times most m3 owners go to the track ...ZERO.

Number of stop lights m3 drivers hit every day ...eleventy billion.

hmmm. let's see... in real-world everyday driving I can get a $70k car that gets 116mpge, a car that can achieve a time of 3.3 seconds 0-60 (same as the $110k+ AMG E63), and AWD...seems like a no-brainer as I leave that old technology BMW M3 in the dust stop light after stop light.

Let's just mention that again... Tesla 116mpge, BMW 20mpg. WOW. This is the real difference that is orders of magnitude above what gas engines can do.

Why is every single article about Tesla? We got it. Tesla makes a fast egg car. OK. If I had to plug my car in every night, I would be calling Uber for work most mornings. Plus, has anyone at Autospies sat in a Tesla? It's the crapiest interior out there. M3 for me.

Everyone here has an opinion, but how many can honestly say you have driven both of these under various speeds and road conditions ? If you have, tell me the main difference between these two. I have, and want to compare notes.

SanJoseDriverSanJoseDriver - 10/31/2018 3:04:00 AM

The reason why Tesla is so successful is because people love the product enough to promote it without being paid. That's worth not overlooking. Also, if you take one look at the interior and walk away... I'm sorry but either you're a Luddite or not an objective consumer. Sit in it, drive it, then tell me you don't like it--then I'll respect your opinion even if it is different than my own.

Disagree with every point and the Performance 3 is destroying the M3 in sales right now, similar price point and similar target buyers. Handles better, faster, no gear-shift lag, low maintenance, almost the exact same single-tank range, OTE updates. The interior of the M3 looks dated and cluttered. It had a good run...
